Christopher Rea è nato il 4 marzo 1951 a Middlesbrough nel North Riding dello Yorkshire, da padre italiano Camillo Rea (morto nel dicembre 2010) originario di Arpino in provincia di Frosinone, e mamma irlandese Winifred K. Slee (morta nel settembre 1983), come altri sette figli. La sua famiglia di fede cattolica romana. Il nome Rea era molto conosciuto a livello locale grazie alla fabbrica di gelati e alla catena di caffetterie del padre. A dodici anni lavorava sparecchiando al bar e preparando il gelato in fabbrica. Voleva migliorare l'attività, ma le sue idee non trovarono sostegno da suo padre. Dopo la partenza fu sostituito da uno dei suoi fratelli. A quel tempo voleva fare il giornalista e frequentò il St Mary's College di Middlesbrough.
