Studiare lo stile di Dodi Battaglia significa compiere un viaggio meraviglioso e sorprendente verso il cuore della musica; significa avere la possibilità di apprendere, da uno dei chitarristi maggiormente rappresentativi del panorama europeo e mondiale, le caratteristiche evolutive dei linguaggi chitarristici dagli anni settanta ai giorni nostri. Introducendo gli elementi tecnici delle trascrizioni possiamo sottolineare sin da subito alcuni tratti comuni che sottostanno allo stile di Dodi Battaglia e che sorprendono per la loro grande varietà ed importanza. Uno degli aspetti primari dello stile di Dodi è senza dubbio la sua identità di compositore che ha profondamente impressionato le caratteristiche del suo linguaggio chitarristico orientandolo verso una rara ricerca della musicalità e della funzionalità delle linee strumentali all'arrangiamento dei brani. Dodi possiede infatti la principale dote che deve avere un musicista, ovvero la capacità di rendere le proprie idee parte essenziale del brano: ogni tema, ogni accordo eseguiti da Dodi, non rimangono semplici "soli" o "accompagnamenti", diventano parte integrante ed imprescindibile dei brani. Tale caratteristica creativa e compositiva emerge in maniera inconfutabile in numerose composizioni dall'impronta sia acustica (vedi: "Pierre';' "50 primavere';' "Grandi speranze'') che elettrica (vedi: "Dammi Solo un minuto''; "Amici per sempre''). Un altro aspetto sorprendente dello stile di Dodi è l'assoluta ecletticità e completezza tecnica e stilistica unita alla "grande personalità musicale" che, pur nell'evoluzione costante dei linguaggi, mantiene sempre salda e riconoscibile la sua identità chitarristica rendendolo "Artista" prima che semplice strumentista. Tale completezza diventa poi ancor più sorprendente se analizzata e contestualizzata storicamente in quanto essa mostra chiaramente la capacità di Dodi di precorrere costantemente i tempi e di essere egli sempre all'avanguardia rispetto ai colleghi europei. Fin dai brani più datati trascritti (vedi: "Parsifal" e "Classe '58'') è chiara la capacità di Dodi di anticipare le sonorità, i fraseggi e le scelte stilistiche che saranno poi caratterizzanti di intere epoche influenzando profondamente le generazioni future. Scendendo negli elementi più tecnici del linguaggio, facendo scorrere l'indice del volume, è immediato notare come i brani scelti per la trascrizione rappresentino mondi musicali differenti nei quali viene messa in luce la notevole preparazione teorica e tecnica di Dodi e la capacità di questo di essere presente, sempre con livelli altissimi, in contesti diversi. Uno degli aspetti, a mio awiso maggiormente sorprendenti, vista la grande notorietà di Dodi come virtuoso della "chitarra elettrica", è l'incredibile preparazione tecnica dello stesso nei linguaggi acustici, nei quali in maniera ancora più naturale, tutte le doti preliminarmente indicate si esprimono al massimo del loro potenziale. La notorietà internazionale di un brano come "Uomini soli" non lascia ombra di dubbio, sin dalla frase introduttiva della chitarra acustica, della perfetta padronanza di Dodi dello strumento. Ma, oltre al brano citato, sono però anche altre le composizioni trascritte che contribuiscono a chiarificare tale lato tecnico dell'Artista: ad esempio "Grandi speranze", brano nel quale, fin dal tema emergono le caratteristiche sorprendenti di cui sopra. Questa composizione è infatti una vera lezione di tecnica di scrittura, oltre che di un chitarrismo latino, nel quale il tocco e gli elementi tecnici (vibrato, legato etc.) si sposano in maniera assolutamente per...

Muta per chitarra classica a 10 corde.

Per chi vuole sperimentare nuove accordature, o vuole dei super bassi mai provati prima su una chitarra classica.

Abbiamo sostituito le tre corde basse di una normale chitarra classica MI LA RE, con queste per chitarra a 10 corde per avere dei bassi una ottava sotto la normale intonazione, senza cambiare l'accordatura. Avrete delle timbriche che non avete mai ascoltato con una chitarra classica.

Non avrete più problemi di rottura del RE !
La corda di RE che frequentemente è quella che cede per prima perchè è la più sottile di tutte, più fine del SOL del SI e a volte del MI cantino. Usando questa corda un'ottava più in basso il RE non si spezzera più, con un suono molto più ricco di armoniche e durevole, sustain, rispetto a un MI abbassato di un tono.

La corda di RE basso e di LA basso sono semplici da accordare perchè prodotte per questa intonazione, mentre per arrivare al MI è necessario allentare la corda e ne consegue un'abbassamento della tensione della corda.

Per usare queste corde basse non sono necessarie modifiche al ponte della normale chitarra, al capotasto potreste inserire qualche piccolo spessore di carta o legno nelle scanalature delle corde, per mantenerle l'action più alto del normale e permetterne lo scorrimento, e evitare che che il MI basso "frigga" sui tasti. Ma le corde basse di una normale chitarra da concerto hanno sempre un 'action più alta, come ci insegna nel suo libro "Parliamo di Chitarre" Jose Ramirez III, avendo bisogno di più spazio per vibrare.

Non ci assumiamo comunque nessuna responsalità per eventuali danni al vostro strumento derivati dell'utilizzo delle 4 corde basse, le altre 6 sono corde per chitarra classica sono di normale spessore. Comunque sulla chitarra da studio usata, non abbiamo avuto problemi per il momento. Consigliamo comunque di installare i 3 o 4 bassi inizialmente su una chitarra da studio, per chi ne avesse una, per provarne le caratteristiche tecniche e timbriche. Il nostro è stato un esperimento con queste corde, per avere i bassi che da tempo desideravamo.
E la chitarra classica con la sua cassa armonica è in grado produrre timbriche basse.
Così avrete le ultime 3 corde come quelle di un basso. Ma con i tasti non così distanziati, e sulla chitarra classica potrete suonare anche degli accordi, insomma una chitarra con le note del basso.

NARCISIO YEPES , THE FINEST PIECES FROM HIS REPERTOIRE.  

Come compositore Yepes è l'autore del famoso pezzo "giochi proibiti". Lo compose per la madre quando era giovanissimo, aveva sette anni. E fu inserito nella colonna sonora del film Jeux interdits del 1952 diretto da René Clement, vincitore del Leone d'oro come miglior film alla 17a mostra del cinema di Venezia. E' ancora un mistero perché Yepes non si attribuì l'autorità di questo brano malinconico e sdolcinato, e inizialmente disse di averlo trovato. Sembra un poco come nel romazo "il nome della Rosa" del 1980 o nel "Baudolino" del 2000 di Umberto Eco, dove la storia inizia con la lettura di un manoscritto antico (che chiaramente è stato scritto dallo stesso Eco) ritrovato tra scartoffie impolverate in un vecchio baule ammuffito all'nterno di una cantina tra i ruderi di un castello abbandonato. 

Yepes suona a volte velocemente una scala cromatica solo con un dito e solo su una corda, per tutta la tastiera, potrebbe sembrare facile, ma non è così, quando si è abituati a suonare con 4 dita, bisogna fare attenzione a sincronizzare lo spostamento del dito, lo si vede anche nel filmato "Passepied di Salvador Bacarisse" a 25 secondi.

Der spanische Gitarrist Narciso Yepes (1927-1997) war einer der groBen Meister seines

 

Instruments. Sein Studium am Konservatorium in Valencia begann er bereits im Alter von 12

Jahren und war SchOlervon Vicente Asensio, der in diesem Band mit der Komposition Collectici

intirn vertreten ist. Ahnlich wie Manuel de Falla hatte auch Yepes eine starke Verbindung

zum Flamenco. Seinen Durchbruch hatte Narciso Yepes 1947 mit der Auffuhrung von Joaquin

Rodrigos Concierto de Aranjuez, das er 1955 auch auf Schallplatte einspielte.

Kompositorisch erlangte Yepes mit seiner Filmmusik fOr den Film Jeux interdits (Rene Clement,

1952) internationale Anerkennung.

Mit zahlreichen Transkriptionen erweiterte Yepes das Repertoire der akustischen Gitarre.

Um flexibler zu transkribieren, lie~ er sich 1964 eine zehnsaitige Gitarre bauen.

The spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes (1927-1997) was one of the great masters of his instrument.

Already at the age of twelve he began studying at University of Valencia and there he was

a pupil of Vicente Asencio, who is presented in this volume with his composition Collectici

intirn. Like Manuel de Falla, Yepes was also closely connected with the Flamenco.

In 1947 Narciso Yepes had his breakthrough with the performance of Joaquin Rodrigo's

Concierto de Aranjuez which he recorded in 1955. As a composer Yepes achieved international

prestige with his score to the film Jeux interdits (Forbidden Games) (1952) directed by Rene

Clement.

Yepes enlarged (enriched) the repertoire of the acoustic guitar with numerous transcriptions.

For being more flexible, he created the ten string guitar in 1964.

The present volume contains the finest pieces from the repertoire of the brilliant musician

Narciso Yepes, who ranked among Andres Segovia and Emilio Pujol to the greatest guitarist

of Spain.

Empezo a estudiar en la universidad de Valencia a la temprana edad de doce anos, y fue

alumno en ella de Vicente Asencio, quien es presentado en este volumen con su composicion

Collectici fntirn. AI igual que Manuel de Falla, tambien Yepes mantuvo una estrecha vinculacion

con el flamenco. En 1947, Narciso Yepes dio un impulso decisivo a su carrera con la interpretacion

del Concierto de Aranjuez, de Joaquin Rodrigo, que grabo en 1955. Como compositor,

Yepes alcanzo la fama internacional con su partitura para la pelfcula Jeux interdits (Juegos

Playing Guitar in Jazz Band is for beginning to intermediate guitarists who are interested in playing in a jazz big band. Playing this style of guitar can be challenging, as the chord changes are often complex, yet the guitar parts should remain simple enough to avoid detracting from the overall sound of the band. This book breaks down that process by substituting difficult chord shapes with more flexible voicings that are designed to sound good on the guitar. Learn a wide variety of rhythmic patterns and work with authentic chord charts that are exactly like the ones you will encounter in real-life situations. This is the perfect crash course for students who have just joined their first jazz band and the ideal companion for music teachers who want to better understand the role of the guitar in their ensemble. A CD demonstrating the examples in the book is included. 

 

Introduction

So, you've joined a jazz band (sometimes called a big band, stage band, or jazz ensemble). Even if you've been a guitar player for a while, you're probably finding some of this music quite different from anything you've played before-a lot of chords going by kind of quickly-right? That's because the sound of big band jazz comes from the cool harmonies generated by the horn sections. Even when the individual horn parts are quite simple, the combined harmonies can be quite complex, making the guitar and piano parts a bit of a challenge. This book is designed as a practical guide for playing in a jazz band. The emphasis is on shortcuts that work in the real world, not complicated theory. You'll learn how to simplify complicated chord charts to suit your current level of ability and chord knowledge. To get the most out of this book, it will be helpful (but not absolutely necessary) to be able to read standard music notation. You need to know basic skills such as tuning the guitar, fretting notes and chords with your left hand, and picking and strumming with your right hand. There are two parts to this book. Part 1 will try to make your life a little easier by presenting some chord voicings and shortcuts to help you get through the musical charts. Part 2 shows you how to add to the basics as you get more comfortable with the pieces you are playing. You may find that these voicings and shortcuts sound better with the band than the fuller voicings you might use in a smaller group. The chord voicings used in this book, particularly in Part 1, are based on the technique used by legendary guitarist Freddie Green of the Count Basie Orchestra. Some band directors encourage guitarists to play chord voicings in a higher register and stay away from the bass. While this is certainly a valid approach-and one that is very effective in small jazz groups-it puts you in'the range of the horns and piano. This makes it necessary to play the extensions and alterations in the chord, as well as eliminate the root of the chord or place it on middle strings. For the novice player, the method in this book will be a lot easier to grasp, since the root will generally be on the bass strings and easier to find, and the shortcuts will enable the player to keep up with the band. Unlike playing in a rock, folk, or country band, the role of the guitar in a big band is primarily to work with the drummer to set up a solid groove, rather than establish the harmonies (which are being played by horns and piano). For example, instead of letting the chords ring, we damp them between the strokes for a more percussive effect (see Chapter 7 for more details). This book deals with the rhythm guitar aspect of stage band playing, or chording, which is mostly what you will be doing. To learn the lead guitar aspect of jazz, refer to a book such asTom Dempsey's Easy Soloing for Jazz Guitar (Alfred/National Guitar Workshop #28246).

How to Use This Book

I suggest you go through Part 1, learning the material in each chapter. If you spend 15 minutes a day, you should be pretty competent in two or three weeks. Then, have a look through Part 2 so you know what's there, but don't try to learn all the chord voicings at once. Gradually, add a few voicings at a time as you encounter them in the pieces you are playing with the band.

David Sinclair is a guitarist from Vancouver, Canada who has toured and recorded with many artists, including Sarah McLachlan, k.d. Lang, Matthew Lien, Amy Sky, Michael Buble, Daniel Powter, Rita MacNeil, Paul Janz, Valdy, Susan Jacks, Terry Jacks, Prism, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Irish Rovers, Holly Arntzen, Leon & Eric Bibb, Gary Fjellgaard, Leonard and Sample, Straight Lines, and Body Electric. As a member of Sarah McLachlan's band, and with k.d. lang, David toured North America, Europe, and Asia. He has appeared on television shows 'including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Arsenio Hall Show, Saturday Night Live, The Larry Sanders Show, Good Morning America, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, The Grammy Awards Show, and the Canadian Juno Awards. Buck Wolters belongs to the very small company of guitar players and composers who are familar with nearly every style. His authentic mix of jazz, world and latin music, combined with a mastery of classical guitar technique is very unique and outstanding. Born in 1961 in Dortmund, Germany, he began to play the guitar as an autodidact at the age of five. After hearing a recording of Big Bill Broonzy he took his first guitar lessons at the age of thirteen, digging into the blues for several years. At the age of sixteen he went to the conservatory in his hometown where he studied classical guitar. The music of Agustin Barrios, Heitor Villa-Lobos and David Qualey were his main influences. After leading the life of a busker in his twenties, he went to the School of Arts in Amsterdam to study jazz guitar and composition and spent most of his time then copying jazz solos from musicians like John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny and Wes Montgomery. He completed his studies as a bachelor with distinction. Today Buck Wolters is very busy performing, composing, recording and teaching throughout Europe. His greatest success belongs to his composition "Dshamilja" ordered in commission by the Opera of Frankfurt.

In the following I will give some brief explanations on the pieces that appear in this book and the popular Caribbean styles that they represent. Moreover some techinical and musical insight on how to produce special sounds on the guitar are given. Keep up the sunny Caribbean mood and have fun with it! Buck Wolters

 

 

Kingston Feet (Reggae)

The word "Reggae" was coined around 1960 in Jamaica to identify a "ragged" style of dance music, that melted New Orleans rhythm'n'blues and Caribbean music together. Later African elements were also included. The legendary Bob Marley (1944 -1981) made Reggae popular all over the world, and he is still one of the most active influences in recent popular music. Kingston Feet is to be played in even eights (straight, no shuffle). On the recording you will hear some percussion elements, which have been left out of the score for reading matters. Anyway, you should learn the piece first without percussion. If you want to add them later, here is an explanation: There are two sounds: a "bass drum" on count three, and a "rimshot" on count one (imitating the drumset). The "bassdrum" is produced by dropping the right-hand palm on the bridge. (It takes a little practice to drop the palm and hit strings at the same time.) The rimshot is produced by tapping a finger (preferably the little one) on the top. The "muffle" or "etouffe" is produced by holding the notes with the left-hand fingers without pressing them down to the fret.

 

Pan-Man-Limbo (Limbo)

The Limbo is also known as the "Under Stick Dance," a dance competition which was very popular at beach parties in Trinidad and Tobago, and is still alive today in Caribbean stage shows. The dancer moves under a stick, trying not to touch it, while being accompanied with Caribbean music, often played on the steeldrum ("Pan"). The harmonics in the beginning of the piece imitate the sound of the "Pan" and they are written as notes that would sound if you fingered them regularly.

 

Friendly Fritz (Reggae)

This Shuffle-Reggae is dedicated to Frit: Rossel, a very good friend of mine and a genius of a special kind. He is an excelent guitar builder, photographer, writer, salesman and last but not least an extraordinary musician. He plays keyboards, bass and guitar like no one I know. The highlight is when he starts to sing: he can imitate any singer from Harry Bellafonte to Mick Jagger, from Stevie Wonder to Bob Marley, that it makes you laugh until you cry. Again you will hear some percussion elements on the recording, which are produced in the same way on the guitar as in Kingston Feet.

 

Mentomania (Mento)

Mento is a style from Jamaican heritage, which had its beginnings in the 19th century and can be seen as the "grandfather" of Reggae. Mento had its golden age in the 1950s. Some of the famous mento musicians of that time were: Harold Richardson, Hubert Potter, and Monty Reynolds. Although Mentomania is notated in even eighths, it has a slight feeling of swing or shuffle. As in many Caribbean rhythms the 3/2 clave is featured. (see Popular Guitar Styles Vol. 1 - Latin & Salsa). To give the piece a light, typical Caribbean mood, I suggest you play it with the capo on the 3rd fret.
