INTRODUCTION
Often called the era of excess, the seventies were certainly an era of excessive change.
On the heels of the tumultuous sixties, myriad forms of rock sprang up, seemingly
overnight, and became codified. The rock family tree sprouted several new branches
including such divergent idioms as heavy metal, funk rock, jazz/rock fusion, power pop,
and progressive rock. Throughout it all, the riff reigned supreme. This volume is dedicated
to seventeen of the period's greatest riffmasters-the pioneers and innovators who
made the music and gave us the riffs that will live forever in the annals of rock and roll.

YOU REALLY GOT ME
Words and Music by Ray Davies
Figure 15-lntro and verse
We tend not to think of Van Halen as a "seventies band" because their work in the
next two decades came to be so historically important, musically innovative, and sweepingly
influential, but it's a fact. The self-titled debut record, released in 1978, was a barometer
indicating a change of climate in the future. Just as Jimi Hendrix had done eleven
years earlier, Van Halen defined a new direction and style for the coming age in tunes like
"Runnin' with the Devil," "I'm the One," "Eruption," and "You Really Got Me." Apparently the
public agreed and responded-"You Really Got Me" made it to the Top 40 and became
Van Halen's first hit single. The band already had been rearranging cover tunes for years
in their early gigging days around Hollywood, transforming them and making them their
own. "You Really Got Me" is a perfect example of how they did it-in Ed's words, "a hot
tune we turned into a jet airplane" -and a perfect vehicle for the maiden voyage of the
power quartet in the waning years of the seventies.
Screaming into the space after the close of "Eruption," the crushing intro riff in "You
Really Got Me" hits you squarely in the face like a left jab. Ed Van Halen converted the
Kinks' shifting barre-chord figure into a harder, more streamlined, very Van Halenesque
open-chord riff in the intro and verses. Deceptively simple, it is founded on a single AS
power chord with an added low G on the sixth string. Many of Ed's "neat noises" abound
in the figure as fills and extra texture, including muffled, percussive chord strums, pick
slides, pinch harmonics, and snarling low bends on the sixth string. The basic rhythmic
pattern and chordal idea are moved to different harmonic levels in the verses. Here, barre
chord and movable power chord versions of the main riff are found as the progression
moves to Band E tonal centers. Check out the intriguing and subtle variations Ed throws
into the figures along the way in the form of licks, fills, and varied interpretations of the
song's thematic motif. His licks and fills have endured in their own right as essential and
invaluable riffs, and have become embedded in the very core of contemporary rock guitar lore.

IRON MAN
Words and Music by Frank lommi, John Osbourne, William Ward, and Terence Butler
Figure 4-lntro, verse, chorus, and interlude
1971 was a watershed year for metal. While Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin were building a stairway to heaven, a Birmingham blues band asked the unthinkable question: Is there life after Zep? Arriving with thundering riffs, sinister occult themes, and dark gothic trappings, the answer came in the form of Black Sabbath. Sabbath is generally acknowledged as the first official heavy metal band-setting undeniable precedents for the late-seventies metal renaissance ("The New Wave of British Heavy Metal"), as well as the thrash/speed metal school of the eighties, and the grunge/metal of the ninetiesa fact underscored by the numerous bands that cite Sabbath as influential-Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Metallica, Pantera, and Soundgarden, among many others. "Iron Man," from the landmark Paranoid album, is one of the heaviest and best riff-based songs of their definitive early period.
"Iron Man" abounds with numerous riffs-each with a purpose, each well-placed in the arrangement. The main "Iron Man" theme is one of metal's most memorable riffs and is heard throughout the song. It appears in the intro as a rhythm figure made of parallel two-note power chords in B minor, spelling out the B natural minor scale (B-C#- D-E-F#-G-A). In the verses, a single-note version of this riff, derived from the roots of the power chords, is used. Between the first and second verses, a second single-note riff in B minor is found as both a connection and a transition. This figure employs chromatic notes in its ascending melody (meas. 23). In the interlude, a different riff is played against a double-time feel (which sets up the guitar solo). This riff is a single-note line which modulates up to C# minor, and uses notes of the C# blues scale (C#-E-F#-G-G#-B) which comes off like a deft manipulation of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" theme. Notice the tough accenting, staccato attack, and syncopation in the phrase which give it plenty of rhythmic character and push forcefully toward Tony's solo.

GUITARIST'S GUITARISTS TABLATURE AL DI MEOLA Mediterranean Sundance CHITARRA

GUITARIST'S GUITARISTS. TABLATURE

Note-for-note transcriptions with tab for 16 searing songs from the gods of guitar! Includes an introduction by John Stix, founding Editor-in-Chief of Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. 160 pages.

JOH STIX
Founding Editor-in Chief, Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine
It was May 1983, during the earliest days of Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. Rock guitar tablature
was about to be joined with a magazine for the first time, and I had developed a mantra for selecting the songs.
The mantra, "It's the song, not the solo," was to remind me that great solos became classic because they
hitched a ride on great songs. We still marvel at the guitar parts and solos to songs like "Hotel California,"
"Stairway to Heaven," "All Along the Watchtower," "Black Magic Woman," and "Reeling in the Years" because
the songs still live as radio classics.
You and I know that the guitar parts and solos to these songs weren't just icing. The fact is, without them there
was no cake. They were vital ingredients for taste, texture, and form. The singer delivered the message, but in
these and in so many other cases, so did the guitarist. Has Jeff Beck ever been less a vocalist than the guy
standing in front of the microphone? Where would Ozzy be without Tony, Randy, or Zakk? How about Roth
without Van Halen or Vai, Plant without Page, Tyler without Perry, and B.B. without Lucille?
Now that we've established "the rule," let's forget it. We're all guitar players here. Let's just admit that we get
giddy because sometimes great guitar playing is just a joy to behold and we can have a blast getting off on
Allan Holdsworth's chops on full thrust or Steve Vai's double-jointed what-the-hell-was-that approach to just
playing the instrument. Let's admit that Jimmy Page's solo on "Since I've Been Loving You" is the best part
of that song.
So that's what this folio is about-the joy of guitar playing. That's the rush of gunning a hotrod down the
straightaway, taking the corners as fast as you can, or playing tooooomanynotes because it feels right. It's not
about complementing or supporting the singer or the song. It's about rocking out; it's about the solo; it's about
the guitar is king-and these are some of the players whom we have crowned at one time or another. It's about
guitarists getting high from great guitar playing.
So who have we got here? We've got the chops busters. There is no woodshed I know of that can turn out
superheroes combining the powers of the Hulk and the Flash. Yet no one hits you as hard and as fast as
players like Allan Holdsworth, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, and Steve Vai. How lucky can we get?
The combined imagination, strength, and agility of all these players is harnessed for the good of one segment
of mankind-other guitarists! Yeah, yeah; of course anybody can enjoy it, but we "get it" first.
We also have the melodic guys-they drive their Ferrari's mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear. We're talking about
restrained muscle, cool phrasing, good tone, and a lot of flair. It's a cry, not a yell. Sometimes it's a yell. So
here we've got everybody's favorite, Jeff Beck; the king of classy guitar playing, Larry Carlton; the man who
makes you know what he's feeling, Santana; phrasing and tone masters Blues Saraceno, Marc Bonilla, and
Steve Lukather; and blues maestro Stevie Ray Vaughan.
How-did-he-do-that playing can also be heard on the acoustic guitar. Naked and raw, flat-picked, or fingered,
the sound of strings on wood can blow you away just as easily as the push from a Marshall stack. Sure, AI Oi
Meola plays intricate melodic parts, but he also plays that fast because he can. And what about the how-manyfingers-
does-that-guy-have approach from Adrian Legg? He's got some sort of double-jointed, ambidextrous
thing going on, doubles on sax, and gets rid of embarrassing stains on nylon carpet pile!
This is a book full of tunes by guitarists who thrill other guitarists. They play rock, blues, jazz fusion, pop, and
acoustic music. They spend their days supporting the vocals and defining the song. And when they let loose,
these are the guys who make other people want to play the instrument-or maybe put it down. These are the
guys you read about in guitar magazines. They are why there are still guitar magazines today. And why in 1983
we started Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine-so we could explore the trails they laid down for the
rest of us. There had to be more than the mantra, right? So let's agree that a great song will stand the test of
time, but a great guitar part or solo will give you the time of you life. We're guitarists; we can have our cake
and eat it, too.

IT's ONLY NATURAL THAT INSTRUMENTALS WERE HITS AT THE DAWN OF ROCK HISTORY. ROCK WASALWAYS DANCE MUSIC, AND THE MUSICAL STYLES IT DREW UPON - BLUES, R&B, COUNTRY AND SWING - HAD STRONG BEATS AND ENGENDERED DANCEABLE INSTRUMENTALS THEMSELVES. BECAUSE ROCK IS ECLECTIC, MANY INSTRUMENTS CAN TAKE THEIR PLACE IN THE SPOTLIGHT. SAXOPHONE PLAYERS - THOSE HEROES OF JAZZ AND SWING - WERE THE STARS OF MANY EARLY ROCK INSTRUMENTALS ("RAUNCHY" AND "TEQUILA," FOR EXAMPLE). ORGANISTS AND DRUMMERS WERE LEADERS OF SOME COMBOS (IN "RED RIVER ROCK" AND "TOPSY II"). HOWEVER, GUITAR PLAYERS WERE IMPORTANT SOLOISTS IN COUNTRY, BLUES AND R&B, SO IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR ROCK TO CREATE A NEW POP HERO, THE ELECTRIC GUITAR PLAYER.

INTO ROCK CAME GUITAR HEROES FROM AN R&B BACKGROUND, LIKE CHUCK BERRY AND BoDIDDLEY, COUNTRY-INFLUENCED STARS LIKE CARL PERKINS AND DUANE EDDY, AND MAVERICKS WHO BRIDGED THE GAPS BETWEEN STYLES, LIKE LONNIE MACK. THEN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE'60s THERE WAS THE VENTURES, A GUITAR INSTRUMENTAL BAND THAT SPAWNED COUNTLESS GUITAR/BAR BANDS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. A FEW YEARS LATER, DICK DALE, THE BEACH BOYS AND OTHER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GROUPS TURNED THE WHOLE COUNTRY ON TO SURF MUSIC, WHICH, INSTRUMENTALLY, WAS JUST LIKE THE VENTURES: A COMBINATION OF POP INFLUENCES WITH GUITAR IN THE FOREFRONT AND POUNDING DRUMS BEHIND.

SOME OF THE EARLY ROCK INSTRUMENTALS WERE RECORDED BY GROUPS WHO WERE THROWNTOGETHER BY A STUDIO PRO OR PRODUCER ("TEQUILA" AND "RAUNCHY" WERE TWO EXAMPLES). OTHERS WERE THE PRODUCT OF TEEN HIGH SCHOOL BANDS LIKE THE CHANTAYS OR JOHNNY AND THE HURRICANES. OTHERS CAME FROM POWERHOUSE INNOVATORS LIKE DUANE EDDY AND LONNIE MACK WHOSE PLAYING WOULD INSPIRE FUTURE GENERATIONS OF GUITARISTS. TOGETHER, THEY ESTABLISHED A ROCK TRADITION, AND THEIR ROCK INSTRUMENTALS STILL APPEAR ON THE CHARTS OVER THREE DECADES LATER.

IT's INTERESTING THAT MANY OF THE CLASSIC INSTRUMENTALS IN THIS COLLECTION CAME NOT FROM HOLLYWOOD OR NEW YORK CITY, BUT FROM TOLEDO, CINCINNATI AND SEATILE ... AND ANYWHERE FOLKS DANCED TO ROCK AND ROLL IN BARS! MANY CLASSIC HITS ("TEQUILA," "WIPE OUT," "HIDEAWAY") WERE THROWAWAYS, B-SIDES RECORDED HASTILY IN ONE OR TWO TAKES, AS BIG A SURPRISE TO THE RECORDING ARTIST AS THEY WERE TO THE PUBLIC-WHICH ONLY PROVES THAT THE PUBLIC LIKES A SIMPLE, UNPRETENTIOUS GROOVE TUNE!

HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS COLLECTION OF CLASSIC ROCK INSTRUMENTALS. THE TRADITION OF ROCK INSTRUMENTALS IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND INCLUDES A WIDE RANGE OF GUITAR STYLES, AS THIS BOOK PROVES. IT ALSO INCLUDES ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR YOU ROCK GUITAR ADDICTS: YOUR MUSICAL EDUCATION IS FAR FROM COMPLETE IF YOU CAN'T PLAY "WIPE OUT," "REBEL 'ROUSER," "WALK DON'T RUN" OR "PIPELINE!"

Most of the world first learned about rock and roll in the second half of the '50s when Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins had their first hits. The rockabilly guitarists of this period - Scotty Moore, Eddie Cochran, Cliff Gallup, Carl Perkins, Paul Burlison, James Burton, Buddy Holly and the rest - became the idols of '60s, '70s and '80s rockers, and their music will always be the touchstone for rock guitar. You'll find their solos and backup playing transcribed and their style analyzed in the pages that follow. There are also some transcriptions of music from their disciples - contemporary players like Albert Lee, Dave and Phil Alvin of the Blasters, and The Stray Cats. Rockabilly started when white Southern performers began playing electric rhythm and blues. They recorded "covers" of R&B hits, like "Good Rockin' Tonight" (Wynonie Harris' version was the biggest R&B record of '48). They also wrote their own tunes and covered country and bluegrass songs. In all cases, they borrowed the flavor and styles of African-American artists, whose music was unlikely to reach white audiences. Naturally, the rockabilly players brought their country, bluegrass and gospel music roots to R&B. The new music that emerged was ROCK AND ROLL. To Alan Freed and other disc jockeys who promoted it, the formula was clear: get white musicians to play popular '50s race music.

One of the ways rockabilly differed from R&B was that the guitar was more prominent. The early rockabilly band consisted of an upright bass, electric guitar, a singer and a drummer. Rhythm guitar (often acoustic) and piano were optional, horns were rare; some two-guitar bands even lacked a drummer. Nearly all solos were played on electric guitar. The lead guitar borrowed heavily from the single and double-note styles of Chuck Berry and T-Bone Walker, the up-the-neck fingerpicking of Merle Travis, and the more basic fingerpicking blues styles of acoustic blues guitarists like Lightnin' Hopkins and Big Bill Broonzy. A little Les Paul-style jazz added to the brew.

THE TWELVE BAR BLUES. Most of the early rockabilly hits were twelve-bar blues tunes, or were based on that form. In this book, "American Music," "Boppin' The Blues," "Everybody's Tryin' To Be My Baby," "Holly Hop," "My Baby Thinks He's A Train," "Put Your Cat Clothes On," "Rock Around The Clock," "Oh Baby Babe," "Rock Billy Boogie," "Skinny Jim," "Tear It Up," "Train Kept A-Rollin" and "Twenty Flight Rock" are all twelve-bar blues tunes and five others are only slight variants of the blues format! Here's the twelve-bar form, expressed in terms of I, IV and V chords (tonic, subdominant and dominant) in the key of E. The final bar of this twelve-bar form is often called a "turnaround," because the V chord "turns the progression around" and leads the ear back to a repeat of the whole twelve bars or to an ending.
