Well, here we go again for you. It's time for our third volume in a series of blues books for Centerstream Publications. If you have any of the earlier editions welcome back, if you are new I'm glad you are here. The concept for this book is unique. I'll be attempting to teach you my loose interpretations of five legendary bluesmens music. In the end I hope this enables you to develop an original style of your own. In my many years of teaching I've discovered an abundance of publications that have exact note for note transcriptions of original blues songs. Attempting to play these was a nightmare. I found that in order to do things exactly, there was no feeling or emotion left in the music. Come on, can anyone really play like Lightnin' Hopkins? The best you can do is take the emotion from the original and do your own thing. How many of you have spent hours trying to learn that one mystery note and have never gotten it to sound right? I say relax, get as close as you can, and go from there. I've taken some liberties with the music in this book. These songs are not even close to being note for note renditions of the originals. I know some blues purists are going to freak out but again, this is primarily a book to help you develop your own style. If I haven't bothered to be precise, I don't expect you to either. Feel free to add and subtract licks when you want. This isn't classical music or brain surgery. Live a little! Finally, I must give credit where credit is due, and that's to the original blues artists. I would never think of taking anything away from them. Without seeing, listening, and learning from them, I would probably still be playing "Last Train to Clarksville" by the Monkees. This is why you should listen to as much original music of these artists as possible. It's the only way to see what's really happening. Remember they are the legends!

It's been well over three decades since I started playing the guitar. From the outset, my creative point of departure has always been American folk, blues, and old-time country styles. This fascination with our musical roots has persisted throughout my career as a performing and recording artist, writer, and teacher. I've had occasion to playa lot of styles of music, from bluegrass to rockabiIly to contemporary folk ... bar-walkin' R&Bwith sax legend Clifford Scott to Chicago blues with Buddy Guy and full-on rock 'n' roll with Bo Diddley. It always seemed that, no matter what the style, the basic musical vocabulary always came straight from the roots.

I've been a contributing editor to Acoustic Guitar magazine since the publication started in 1990, and, in recent years, I've also served as an instructor/performer at several guitar festivals that the magazine has sponsored in the San Francisco Bay area Whether writing an article or teaching a guitar clinic, my approach to presenting this material encompasses technique, repertoire, and history, along with anecdotes and lore concerning the music and musicians. Roots and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar takes a similar approach, incorporating all these elements into one book and CD.

A large part of this text is an instruction manual for the beginning- and intermediate-level fingerstyle guitarist. Twenty-five tunes are transcribed in tablature and notation along with chord diagrams and explanatory notes. These include my own arrangements for blues, rags, and country themes along with excerpts from the recorded works of some roots guitar pioneers. Specific techniques are pointed out as they occur in the music. The accompanying CDcontains recorded examples from the songs as they are transcribed, played slowly and up to tempo with reference pitches for retuning where needed. Although the material is not necessarily sequenced in order of difficulty, starting with the first chapter and playing through the basics is suggested regardless of experience level.

The balance of the book is history, homily, and hooraw in various combinations. Members of my audiences often tell me that the stories about this music and the many remarkable people and circumstances that have contributed to its development over the years make the songs more real to them. Likewise, students seem more motivated to learn and practice when they feel like the tunes are old friends (which they are). This is good, because learning to play this style is largely a function of dogged, repetitive reptile-brain, your-dinner's-getting-cold practice. The good old southern American big-thumb guitar method is originally a rural art, so it doesn't take a socio-ethnologist to figure out that the early practitioners were farmers like Mance Lipscomb and Sam McGee. Pitching hay or plowing with a mule isn't as easy on the mitts as a pre-recital warm-up; but what they lacked in interdigital articulation, the inventors of twang made up in pure squeeze powerNwhich came in handy at barn dances and country suppers where the first set was three hours long. Times have changed, but the musical work ethic persists. The express train and church bells sound of "Buckdancer's Choice" or the sledgehammer Delta crunch of "Roll and Tumble" doesn't cascade from the box with the first love pat. One way I've found to keep things jolly while working on the cusp of carpal tunnel syndrome is to recall a few of the things I've heard or experienced over the years while passing up hot meals and paychecks to verify drawled rumors about primal string noise to be heard at the fourth house after the pavement stops. So these pages include excerpts from the well-thumbed old travel guide that leads to this music. When their honky-tonk and rock 'n' roll progeny came down the road with the first electric line, some of these tunes were already rocking on the porch saying: "What took you so long?" welcome to Blues Solo for Guitar. I'm going to walk you through the 12-bar blues-a 12-bar slow blues in G, to be exact-that you'll find as track 1 on the accompanying CD. It's titled "Blues Number One," and it's a great place to begin your exploration of the blues. Later in the book, we'll explore varying styles of blues playing that will give you a solid foundation in lead and rhythm blues guitar. I'll explain the key rhythms and solo phrases in styles based on Memphis funk blues, the boogie shuffle patterns made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan, the vaunted styling of Freddie King, Texas swing blues, and even rockabilly. You'll be able to listen to me solo in all those styles on the accompanying CD, then I'll dissect each and every note so that you can master these styles as well. How 10 Use This Book Inlaying out solos in each of these six blues styles, it turns out that there are a lot of short phrases that you can learn, lift out, and use in your own style of playing. In other words, you don't have to learn each solo exactly the way it was played on the CD. You can listen through the entire CD, hear everything that I'm going to play for you, then go back and pick out the phrases that you like best. Then you can learn those phrases and incorporate them into your own style of playing. It's good practice to take all of these ideas and then mix them in with what you already know how to play. Of course there are things to be learned by playing an entire solo: how the solo builds, how to make a transition from one chorus to the next, how to begin and end the whole thing. Those are elements of style that make the phrases fit together so that they actually sound good. But the individual phrases themselves can be picked out and used in practically any blues solo. These phrases can also be used in blues songs with different tempos and in different keys. In addition to performing the six complete solos on the CD, I'm going to explain each phrase one at a time using "Practice Points" and detailed directions that will help you duplicate my solo phrases. Through these Practice Points, I'll tell you all about the left hand, the right hand, different little tricks, techniques, and where to place your hand on the neck. As you listen to the CD, read the musical notation and tablature for each phrase, t hen refer to the Practice Points that explain the details of each phrase. Then practice along with my examples on the CD. When we get through, you'll know all the phrases and you can play them along with the rhythm-only tracks-the full band, minus-guitar tracks we've included on the ProLicks CD. Playing along with the rhythm-only tracks will give you an opportunity to get a feel for how your phrasing sounds against a rhythm section and whether or not you're playing correctly. Some of the phrases are easier than others. Some are slower; some are faster. Take your time. Practice each phrase as many times as you need to get it right. And most of all, have fun! Remember, take these phrases one at a time. Some of these licks work only over one of the chords in the progression, or in a certain situation. Some of them can be laid over any of the chords. You have to experiment a little bit to see what you can do with them once you get them down. But these are all real solid, traditional, classic licks, and I think once you integrate them into your style you'll have a lot of fun developing them.
