Lessons and Tab for 75 Extreme Guitar Tapping Ideas
Series: Musicians Institute Press
Publisher: Musicians Institute Press
Softcover with CD - TAB
Author: Jean Marc Belkadi

Tackle tapping one-on-one in this Private Lesson with MI instructor Jean Marc Belkadi! He covers: blues and classic tapping licks; scalar tapping licks; triads and arpeggios; advanced tapping licks; string skipping, multi-finger tapping, tapped bends, pedal points, open strings and other devices; and so much more. The book is in standard notation and tab, and the accompanying CD contains 75 demo tracks for listening. Each example is played at full tempo, and most are repeated at half speed. 40 pages.

Introduction

Though the birth of tapping is largely associated with the eighties decade, players had begun experimenting with it as early as the mid-to-Iate seventies. Namely among them are session whiz Larry Carlton and the inimitable Jeff Beck. It was only a matter of time before someone would truly exploit the technique and harness the potential it possessed. Eddie Van Halen almost singlehandedly
introduced the technique to the guitar world with the release of Van Hafen near the turn of the decade. Rock guitar players everywhere jumped on the bandwagon, and within a few years a new breed of tappers emerged with their own style. Players such as Greg Howe, Steve Lynch, Reb Beach, and Jennifer Batten twisted and reinvented the technique, achieving unprecedented results. More recently in the nineties, fusion and contemporary guitarists Stanley Jordan and T.J. Helmerich took it to the next level, in many instances getting rid of the pick all together.
The objective of this book is to provide some different ways of using the tapping technique. The licks presented here draw from the styles of all the above-mentioned masters. Therefore, a great variety of techniques will be covered. It is hoped that you'll find many ideas in this book that you'll be able to incorporate into your own playing. Good luck and enjoy.

Executed all on the B string and involves bending the string up whole steps with the left hand while the right hand hammers a series of notes within the bends in the key of C. Each time the right hand is to hammer a note, release the bend a half step. When the right hand contacts the string re-bend the str ing back to a whole step. Whenever you hammer on a string which has been bent, you must account for the interval you have bent (ie. if you've bent the note G on the B string up a whole step, and then hammered on the 12th fret, the resulting note would be CII). If you hadn't bent the string, the 12th fret would be a B. If you had bent the string up only a half step, the resulting note would be a C. So make sure you anticipate the pitch change. after you've made the initial bend from 0 up to E, keep the string bent while hammering the right hand notes. Every time the Eb grace note comes up, drop the whole step bend a half step to attain the Eb note, then return the bend to E natural. The last 3 triplets are sounded by slowly dropping the left hand bend while hammering with the right hand.

Composer: Jean Marc Belkadi

This one-on-one lesson with MI instructor Jean Marc Belkadi applies the slap bass techniques popularized by Louis Johnson, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and others to the guitar. Covers basic slap and pop techniques in funk, rock, R&B, Latin and reggae styles. The book includes standard notation and tab, and the accompanying CD features 52 full-band demo tracks. 24 pages .

Introduction

The purpose of this book is to provide a fresh perspective on the subject of funk guitar. For years, I played funk the way most guitarist do-with a pick. This sound is certainly a staple of funk music and a must-learn for all serious funk guitarists. After becoming increasingly interested in funk bass players and the techniques they used, however, I began experimenting with slap and pop techniques (commonly used with bass) in my guitar playing. Influenced by players such as Louis Johnson, Yanic Top, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, and Kevin Eubanks, I began imitating the sounds I heard from them on my guitar. Years later, I've found that, although funk is an obvious choice, this technique can be applied to many styles. Throughout this book, we'll also see it applied to R&B, Motown, Reggae, and Latin styles. We'll also cover odd meters and straight-ahead funk-rock grooves. When it's all done, you'll have a new vocabulary of techniques to incorporate into your own playing.

Technical Performance Notes

In order to best digest the information in this book, it's probably necessary to discuss a few techniques

that aren't commonly found in guitar notation. Below is a list of abbreviations and explanations

that pertain to the musical figures found in this book. You may recognize many of these from

conventional bass notation.

T - Strike or "slap" the string with the right-hand thumb.

P - Snap or "pop" the string by pulling upwards with the index finger of your right hand and quickly

releasing it.

L - Slap the strings on the fretboard with your left-hand fingers laid flat, creating a muted percussive

effect.

I - Strum with your right-hand index finger (downstroke) as if it were a pick.

$- Hammer or "tap" the fret indicated with one of the fret-hand fingers.

F - Strum with the nail of your right-hand thumb (upstroke).

Though the "slap" technique is very familiar to most bass players, guitar players have usually not experimented

with this before. Try different positions along the string to ensure that you are not producing a

harmonic with your slap. Also, try to keep your right arm parallel to the strings.

Examine the solo concepts of the masters in this unique book/CD pack. You'll learn the signature techniques of Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Edward Van Halen and many others through phrase-by-phrase performance notes. Also covers long ascending and descending runs, two-handed guitar, rapid-fire repeating licks, sweep picking, building solos and more. The book includes standard notation & tab, and the CD features full demonstrations and rhythm-only tracks.

Welcome to Hard Rock Solos for Guitar. In this book, I'm going to walk you through some hot metal and hard rock solos inspired by such players as Edward Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker, Ulrich Roth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gary Moore, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Lynch, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Stanley Jordan, Steve Vai, Jeff Watson, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck. We'll explore various aspects of these players' soloing techniques, giving you a solid foundation in metal and hard rock lead guitar playing. You'll be able to listen to me solo on the accompanying CD, and I'll dissect each and every note so that you can master these styles as well. As you go through the solos in this book, you'll discover that there are a lot of short phrases that you can learn, lift out, and use in your own style of playing. In other words, you don't have to learn each solo exactly the way it was played on the CD. You can listen through the entire CD, hear everything that I'm going to play for you, and then go back and pick out the phrases that you like best. Then you can learn those phrases and incorporate them into your own style. It's good practice to take all of these ideas and mix them in with what you already know. Of course, there are things to be learned by playing an entire solo: how the solo builds, how to make a transition from one section to the next, how to begin and end the whole thing. These are elements of style that make the phrases fit together so that they actually sound good. But the individual phrases themselves can be picked out and used in practically any hard rock solo. These phrases can also be used in rock songs with different tempos and in different keys.

In addition to performing the six complete solos on the CD, I'm going to explain each phrase one at a time using "Practice Points"-detailed directions that will help you duplicate my licks. Through these Practice Points, I'll tell you all about the left hand, the right hand, different little tricks and techniques, and where to place your hand on the neck. After you listen to a solo on the CD and follow along with the transcription, refer to the Practice Points that explain the details of each phrase. When you get through, you'll know all the phrases and will be able to play them along with the solo track or with the rhythm-only track that follows-a full band, minus-guitar track we've also included on this Pro Licks CD. Playing along with the rhythm-only tracks will give you an opportunity to get a feel for how your phrasing sounds against a rhythm section and whether or not you're playing correctly. Some of the phrases are easier than others. Some are slower; some are faster. Take your time. Practice each phrase as many times as you need to get it right, and take each phrase one at a time. Some licks will work only over one of the chords in the progression, or in a certain situation. Some of them can be laid over any of the chords. You have to experiment a little bit to see what you can do with them once you get them down. But these are all real solid, traditional, classic metal and hard rock licks, and once you integrate them into your style, you'll have a lot of fun developing them.

Introduction
Welcome to Jim Kelly's Guitar Workshop. For years I've written material to use in private lessons, ensembles, and workshops entitled Jazz Rock Improvisation and Jazz Rock Rhythm Guitar. This is a collection of songs and studies that I use in the classroom and in concert, for the student as well as the working professional. This is not a method book as such., nor is it aimed at a specific level of experience. It need not be studied in sequence. Some parts will be very difficult for a beginner, and some parts easy for the more advanced player. This is resource material to play with friends, teachers, students, or the enclosed CD. Many of these songs T play on gigs because the arrangements are simple enough to learn quickly with a band and there's room to "stretch" and solo. The studies are designed to develop different skills and to build musical and technical vocabulary. The CD falls somewhere between a "record" and a "play-along." The band and I wanted the music to be as alive as possible to keep the sound real while preserving the option of removing the guitar later. You will notice some leakage of the guitar track when it is removed, especially with the acoustic bass. We recorded live in the studio and got as much isolation as we could while keeping a natural feel. Any flaws contained in the performances were left as a matter of "close enough for now." Strive for perfection, but in the meantime, play the best you can. I hope you enjoy this material and find it as useful as I have. Jim

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

GUITAR NOTATION LEGEND

Harmonies are the unique overtones produced from a tuned open or fretted guitar string, occurring
at specific harmonic points, or nodes, along the string. The most typical harmonic sound, produced
by lightly touching and plucking a string at one of these nodes, is often likened to bells or chimes, due to the high pitch and transparent timbre. But harmonic techniques can also produce sounds that are more like screams and wails, as you will see in this book! Harmonics offer a world of sonic, melodic, and chordal possibilities, and the different applications of this technique can yield some impressive results for guitarists of any level or playing style.
The use of harmonics by guitarists in all styles of music is quite common. Classical guitarists and composers have used them for centuries. Rock and jazz players have always been aware of harmonics and use them often. Legendary guitarists from the past have staked claim on this musical territory and will be remembered as true innovators. Masters such as Eddie Van Halen, Pat Metheny, Michael Hedges, Jeff Beck, and Pantera's "Dimebag" Darrell have proven their individual mastery of playing harmonics.
Newer generations of musicians and some of the latest musical styles have also enhanced their sounds with harmonics. Guitarists such as Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit), Mark Tremonti (Creed), and Jerry Horton (Papa Roach) have utilized harmonics in modern rock recordings.
Any student of the guitar, regardless of musical preference, would greatly benefit from learning about harmonics and the different techniques used to produce them on the guitar. Learning how to create harmonics and understanding the techniques used will help any player wanting to expand his or her musical horizons. This book will demonstrate many harmonic techniques and applications that you can incorporate into your playing with a considerably short amount of practice.
As you progress through this book, be sure to take your time and carefully listen to the accompanying audio CD. The tracks on the CD were recorded to ensure that any student wanting to learn more about harmonics can hear what these different techniques sound like and what they can produce. Many of the examples are repeated at different speeds so that you can analyze them at a slower pace and hear them in "real time."
If you are curious as to what these techniques sound like in the hands of experienced players in various contexts, be sure to check out the short discography at the close of this book. Try to find some of the recordings from these players, and listen to how they use harmonics. Good luck!

Now that you have seen many different applications of harmonics, I hope you continue this musical
journey and explore some new uses for this technique. You can start with the short discography
listed in the previous chapter, but don't stop there. Listen to current, cutting-edge artists, as well
as those from the past who have broken new ground. Having refined the use of guitar harmonics, Eddie Van Halen would be required listening for someone who is new to his style. There are plenty of latebreaking artists who utilize harmonics in their music as well-groups like Creed, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park, to name a few.
Keep the framework of what you are playing in mind, but also use your imagination to help you find new sounds. Without the gifted imagination of Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Breau, Jeff Beck, Michael Hedges, and Steve Vai, many music-making techniques that countless guitarists use everyday might not have been discovered or developed. Also, beware of teaching methods and instructions that try to define the "right" and "wrong" way to make music. There are some practices that are physically unhealthy and should be avoided for the sake of your well-being (like bad posture or high volume). But if you find a technique that works for you and sounds good in your music, then it's totally acceptable to continue developing it as a new form of artistic expression, whether or not it's deemed "improper." If it sounds good to your ears, then it's a good thing, regardless of what a book or instructor may tell you.
Musicians have used harmonic techniques for centuries-if not millennia-all over the globe on many
different instruments. The alluring sounds of harmonics "tickle" the senses and inspire players in every style of music. Masterful guitarists from the past have helped shape the broad range of harmonic sounds that we can utilize on the instrument. But this is only the beginning, and the great players of the present day show us that there are always new ways to use these ancient techniques.
"Radical" thinkers and players keep the musical world moving forward and prevent guitarists and music from all sounding the same. The innovative use of harmonics has often been part of the "radical" thinking of guitar pioneers. I hope the explorations in this book help you to find your own style or "voice."
