It is hard to think of a jazz artist-make that any artist·with as much breadth depth, and sheer longevity as Kenny Burrell. His career, now over a half long has spanned all the major epochs of the art form and continues to flourish. Him gegan his professional life in the mid forties as swing music made its inexorable trans to bebop and modern jazz. He was one of the earliest guitarists in the medio to assimilate the novel innovations of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, O. Peterson and mix them with his seminal swing and blues influences. Burrell early mosaic, already a diverse mix of swing, blues, and modern jazz, included Christian, Django Reinhardt, and Oscar Moore as well as T-Bone Walker, John L. Hooker, Waters, Floyd Smith, Johnny Moore, and the full gamut of jazz and keyboard players. The results were heard in strong relief with his output of the mid '50 on the Blue Note and Prestige labels. From there, Burrell assumed the role of trendsetter and has si ce been viewed as one of the genre's major innovators and leaders. By decade's end he as redefining the sonic possibilities of jazz guitar on his groundbreaking guitar-bass-drums recordings and set new standards in the organ-trio medium through his inventive and sympathetic work with Jimmy Smith. A Night at the Vanguard (1959) demonstrated wha a gui ar could do as the sole melodic/harmonic instrument in a combo setting. And Jimmy Smith recordings like The Sermon (1958), Home Gookin' (1959), Back at the Ghicken Shack (1960), and Midnight Special (1960) produced a template which is followed assiduously to this day. Never content to rest on his laurels, Burrell continued with a number of ambitious and successful experiments mating the jazz guitar to a wider variety of combo and orchestral applications. Moreover, Burrell's landmark efforts in the burgeoning soul-jazz style influenced legions of guitar players and other instrumentalists across various stylistic divides and indeed presaged the funk styles percolating and emerging in the late sixties. Since then, Burrell has touched virtually every form in the genre from the grittiest, folksy blues, funky soul-jazz, and traditional gospel hymns to esoteric modal jazz and the loftiest post-bop modern styles-always delivered with taste, musical sensitivity, and his personal, highly identifiable stamp. His appropriately titled opus Guitar Forms (1965), presented another side of his artistry and showcased many of his diverse tangents in microcosm, from the acoustic classical guitar/amplified jazz guitar and orchestral combinations in "Greensleeves" and his solo nylon-string adaptation of George Gershwin's "Prelude #2" to his Spanish/Mexican-influenced original "Loie," the down-home blues bent of "Downstairs," and the straight-ahead jazz rendition of "Breadwinner." Kenny Burrell continues to lead and inspire guitarists to the present day. His legacy is assured and implicit in his overriding credo: "Let your spirit come through and you will always touch others. Give the music your personal best. Be yourself-it works.". Truer words were never spoken. Kenny Burrell personifies and epitomizes the word and mood "blue." An attribute that permeates the heart of jazz, blue is a universal feeling, a resonance extending to all forms of music. Kenny said as much, in words and sounds, in his aptly titled work Blues: the Gommon Ground. And he has done much to show us the many hues of blue in his copious repertory. Over the years, Kenny has gained considerable cachet with evocative titles like K.B. Blues, Blue Moods, Blue Lights, Bluesin' Around, Midnight Blue, Blue Bash, Blues: the Gommon Ground, and his recent Blue Muse. Each underscores the fact that shades of indigo are primary colors in his artistic palette and convey the essence of his musical persona.

Take an in-depth look at Kenny Burrell's jazz guitar mastery with Wolf Marshall, who will teach you how to play some of his hottest licks. Wolf covers 14 tunes. The CD features a demo of each. 128 pages

GUITAR BOOGIE SHUFFLE
(As Performed by The Virtues featuring Jimmy Bruno Sr.) By Arthur Smith
Figure 4 - Intro, Head, and First Guitar Solo
Rewriting history can be a daunting and problematic business. Such is the case with "Guitar Boogie Shuffle." History incorrectly credits Frank Virtue as the guitarist on the track and further ascribes the tune to Arthur Smith. Its inclusion in this collection provides us with an ideal opportunity to set the record straight. Here is the real story as recounted and substantiated by his son, Jimmy Bruno Jr. (who incidentally is one of the most compelling jazz guitarists on the scene today-check him out). In the 1940s and 1950s, guitarist Jimmy Bruno Sr. played with a bassist named Frank Virtue. Virtue was not an accomplished musician but had an uncanny knack for obtaining work. As times were tough, Bruno stayed with this band. In the 1950s, Virtue built a small recording studio in his house and there they recorded "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" as the Virtues. The members on the date were Jimmy Bruno Sr. (guitar), Tom Friday (drums), Ralph Federico (piano) and Frank Virtue (bass). Contrary to popular belief, Bruno Sr. was the composer of the music but failed to copyright his work, thinking that the boogie-woogie riff was public domain and not realizing that his arrangement granted him ownership rights. A self-made millionaire, Arthur Smith, who had recorded a different version on acoustic earlier, wound up with the rights and the credit. Virtue's lawyers and the record company saw to it that Bruno received 10% of 1% for his efforts. Bruno discovered this while on tour and quit on the spot, vowing never to record again and further stating that Virtue would never have another hit song. "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" reached #5 on March 23, 1959 and remained in the Top 40 for twelve weeks. It was the Virtues' one and only hit.
"Guitar Boogie Shuffle" is a 12-bar blues in E (which sounds a half step lower in Eb)
founded on a swing-inspired triplet feel. In the intro, Bruno plays a ground-finding pattern
in eighth-note rhythm on the open low E string to get things rolling. His sound during the
head is treated with generous amounts of slap-back echo. The head [A] is based on a fournote
ascending-descending melody (E-G#-B-C#: root-third-fifth-sixth) which is the quintessential
boogie riff of the period-in essence, a left-hand boogie-woogie piano pattern
transferred to the bass register of the electric guitar. Variations of this figure are moved
through the I-IV-V changes of a simple 12-measure, three-chord blues progression. Note
the use of G (the seventh) over the A chord in measure 7, and the use of 0 (the sharp
ninth) over the B7 chord in measure 10.
The interlude [B] is based on a catchy ostinato riff made of a quarter note and an
eighth-note triplet. The triplet contains the ascending chromatic motion B-C-C#, which
strengthens the sixth (the goal of this motion) in the figure. This riff, like the main theme, is
taken through the 12-rneasure blues form with slight variations.
Bruno's improvised solo choruses in [C] and [0] reveal the close relationship of late
1940s swing jazz and early rock 'n' roll. You could describe these phrases as "Charlie
Christian licks in a jitterbug context." His lines are certainly jazz-oriented, based primarily
on the E Major scale (E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#), with characteristic passing-tone chromaticism
in measures 26, 28, 41-43, and 45-47, and arpeggios in measure 32-34. Specific
references to Charlie Christian's style are heard in the explicit use of the sixth tone (C#) in
measures 27-29 and measure 45, the inverted mordent embellishing figure in measure 31
(a Lester Young motive popularized by Christian on the guitar), the staccato rhythmic
motive in measures 34-35, and the dominant-ninth lick in measures 42-43. Unlike
Christian's style, Bruno's licks are devoid of string bends and contain no overt references
to Texas and Oklahoma blues guitar styles.
On the recording, Jimmy Bruno Sr. played a honey blonde Gretsch hollow body
(probably a 6120) with DeArmond pickups, and plugged into an Ampeg Gemini II amp.

The Farina brothers, Santo & Johnny, were born in Brooklyn, New York. Santo, October 24, 1937 and Johnny, April 30, 1941. The boys were young when their Dad was drafted into the Army and stationed in Oklahoma. There on the radio he heard this beautiful music, it was the sound of the steel guitar. He wrote home to his wife and said "I'd like the boys to learn to play this instrument". When he returned from the war they searched out to a man who could get them started with the steel. Years later, they formed a band, playing at church dances, weddings and clubs. The Farina brothers began to gather fans from Brooklyn to Long Island.
As their popularity grew locally they recorded a couple of demo tapes. Johnny made the rounds of the New York record companies. One day Johnny decided to try a music publishing company and there is where the history of "Sleep Walk" started, they signed a song writer's contract which later on lead them to Canadian American Records. Their first release in 1959 was "Sleep Walk" which was written by Santo & Johnny. It was the last #1 instrumental of the 50's and earned them a Gold Record. With their unmistakable sound, they appeared on all the top music shows, "The Alan Freed Show", "Dick Clarks' American Bandstand", "The Perry Como Show" etc. etc

INTRODUCTION
Often called the era of excess, the seventies were certainly an era of excessive change.
On the heels of the tumultuous sixties, myriad forms of rock sprang up, seemingly
overnight, and became codified. The rock family tree sprouted several new branches
including such divergent idioms as heavy metal, funk rock, jazz/rock fusion, power pop,
and progressive rock. Throughout it all, the riff reigned supreme. This volume is dedicated
to seventeen of the period's greatest riffmasters-the pioneers and innovators who
made the music and gave us the riffs that will live forever in the annals of rock and roll.

YOU REALLY GOT ME
Words and Music by Ray Davies
Figure 15-lntro and verse
We tend not to think of Van Halen as a "seventies band" because their work in the
next two decades came to be so historically important, musically innovative, and sweepingly
influential, but it's a fact. The self-titled debut record, released in 1978, was a barometer
indicating a change of climate in the future. Just as Jimi Hendrix had done eleven
years earlier, Van Halen defined a new direction and style for the coming age in tunes like
"Runnin' with the Devil," "I'm the One," "Eruption," and "You Really Got Me." Apparently the
public agreed and responded-"You Really Got Me" made it to the Top 40 and became
Van Halen's first hit single. The band already had been rearranging cover tunes for years
in their early gigging days around Hollywood, transforming them and making them their
own. "You Really Got Me" is a perfect example of how they did it-in Ed's words, "a hot
tune we turned into a jet airplane" -and a perfect vehicle for the maiden voyage of the
power quartet in the waning years of the seventies.
Screaming into the space after the close of "Eruption," the crushing intro riff in "You
Really Got Me" hits you squarely in the face like a left jab. Ed Van Halen converted the
Kinks' shifting barre-chord figure into a harder, more streamlined, very Van Halenesque
open-chord riff in the intro and verses. Deceptively simple, it is founded on a single AS
power chord with an added low G on the sixth string. Many of Ed's "neat noises" abound
in the figure as fills and extra texture, including muffled, percussive chord strums, pick
slides, pinch harmonics, and snarling low bends on the sixth string. The basic rhythmic
pattern and chordal idea are moved to different harmonic levels in the verses. Here, barre
chord and movable power chord versions of the main riff are found as the progression
moves to Band E tonal centers. Check out the intriguing and subtle variations Ed throws
into the figures along the way in the form of licks, fills, and varied interpretations of the
song's thematic motif. His licks and fills have endured in their own right as essential and
invaluable riffs, and have become embedded in the very core of contemporary rock guitar lore.

IRON MAN
Words and Music by Frank lommi, John Osbourne, William Ward, and Terence Butler
Figure 4-lntro, verse, chorus, and interlude
1971 was a watershed year for metal. While Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin were building a stairway to heaven, a Birmingham blues band asked the unthinkable question: Is there life after Zep? Arriving with thundering riffs, sinister occult themes, and dark gothic trappings, the answer came in the form of Black Sabbath. Sabbath is generally acknowledged as the first official heavy metal band-setting undeniable precedents for the late-seventies metal renaissance ("The New Wave of British Heavy Metal"), as well as the thrash/speed metal school of the eighties, and the grunge/metal of the ninetiesa fact underscored by the numerous bands that cite Sabbath as influential-Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Metallica, Pantera, and Soundgarden, among many others. "Iron Man," from the landmark Paranoid album, is one of the heaviest and best riff-based songs of their definitive early period.
"Iron Man" abounds with numerous riffs-each with a purpose, each well-placed in the arrangement. The main "Iron Man" theme is one of metal's most memorable riffs and is heard throughout the song. It appears in the intro as a rhythm figure made of parallel two-note power chords in B minor, spelling out the B natural minor scale (B-C#- D-E-F#-G-A). In the verses, a single-note version of this riff, derived from the roots of the power chords, is used. Between the first and second verses, a second single-note riff in B minor is found as both a connection and a transition. This figure employs chromatic notes in its ascending melody (meas. 23). In the interlude, a different riff is played against a double-time feel (which sets up the guitar solo). This riff is a single-note line which modulates up to C# minor, and uses notes of the C# blues scale (C#-E-F#-G-G#-B) which comes off like a deft manipulation of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" theme. Notice the tough accenting, staccato attack, and syncopation in the phrase which give it plenty of rhythmic character and push forcefully toward Tony's solo.

In virtually every tune, the listener can hear evidence of Randy's
elaboration and embellishment of the basic song structure with
countless additional fills, extending and intensifying existing sections
with interesting new material. All the familiar Rhoads-isms
are here but more plentiful: long, elastic bends, wailing artificial
harmonics, switch flipping, pick slides, portamento glissandi, pull off
flurries, trills and whammy bar manipulations uf all lypes. Tn
"Crazy Train" Randy elaborates on the basic song structure by
adding two solos to the form which function as intro and outro,
respectively. These new solo sections were given a freer treatment,
producing statements which were more like an assortment of fills
and noises than the constructed solos he was famous for.
Randy approached his solos in two ways. The first being a stylized
classical concept of reproducing/duplicating the melodic and
rhythmic entity intact, with little or no obvious variation. The solos
to "I Don't Know," "Crazy Train," "Mr. Crowley," "Flying High gain,"
"Revelation (Mother Earth)," "Steal Away (The Night)" and
"Goodbye to Romallce" all share this approach. The second is one
in which he paraphrases while extemporizing/improvising on the
underlying solo mood, structure and thematic content. This more
liberal attitude is employed in the solos of "Believer," "Suicide
solution," "iron Man," "Children of the Grave," "Paranoid" and
''No Bone Movies," where fragments from the original solos serve
as inspiration for further invention.
Throughout his live performance, Randy used sound effects from
his pedal board coloristically to add new dimension to the song
(e.g. the final chorus of "I Don't Know," where the wah-wah is
heard prominently as a filter sweep) or to generally enhance solo
lines and chord textures. His well-known arsenal of processors:
wah. flanger, fuzz, chorus, EQ, echo and delay was exploited to
an even greater extent than in the studio.
Included in this collection is Randy's unaccompanied guitar solo
which evolves from the closing bars of "Suicide Solution." The
elaboration begun in the internal solo hints at the mood and substance
of an a cappella spot, particularly in the usage of exotic
intervals (tritones), feedback, quick ascending and descending
phrases and whammy bar sounds. The unaccompanied solo combine
virtuoso flash techniques with melodious episodes, culminating
in a mixture of compositional and jammed styles. Key elements
in thi solo are: extremely fast minor pentatonic riffs which are
moved through related tonal centers, muted flurries, diminished
7th arpeggio out-lines, scalar, triadic and chromatic runs, double-
handed sequences and whammy bar growls and dives.
It is immediately obvious that the Black Sabbath selections in
this set were particularly conducive to Randy's style by virtue of
several aspects-the darker, quasi-classical (early Eurometal) mood
in modality and melodic content; the heavier driving rhythm feel
(much like his own riffs); and the backing chord progressions for
solos, which complemented his penchant for signature melodic rolling
scale passages and use of minor and exotic line forms_ This
suited his guitar playing more aptly than the pop-rock leanings of
his Quiet Riot material, which relied in great part on I IV V chord
progressions depictive of the major mode. In "Children of the Grave"
the background harmony for the solo is 1 vi vii, an Aeolian chord
pattern, which seems to coax out of Randy the trademark style he
developed with Ozzy. The solo to "Paranoid," again built over a
driving minor riff, combines, humorously, Chuck Berry unison bend
sequences with "outside" scale excursions, bent tap-ons and
machine-gun quick picking ostinati. A clear example of Randy
Rhoads' rootsier rock 'n' roll/blues side can be heard throughout
the straight ahead rocker "No Bone Movies," which finds him using
ideas from the basic A pentatonic/blues vocabulary effectively.
Furthermore, a solid rock 'n' roll 12/8 triplet phrasing indicative
of blues shuffle rhythm and soloing over a simple 1 IV chord progression
strengthens this impression.
Possibly the most unique and unexpected treasure on this album
is the personal experience offered the listener to join Randy in the
studio during the tracking of "Dee. "Here we share intimate moments
of a thoughtful performance, resulting in two foundation tracks being
laid down, over which he added over-dubbed voices to create the
familiar masterpiece. Admirers of Rhoads' studio technique will
appreciate the insights, informality and candor of this all-too brief
session with Randy.
In re-evaluating his contributions, it becomes apparent that
Randy Rhoads' work is still as moving and significant as it was
over five years ago. It is interesting to see the seeds Rhoads planted
take root and bear fruit in so many contemporary guitarists' styles.
His pioneering of the fusion of high-tech heavy metal with classical
and exotic musics redefined and revitalized the idiom of modern
rock guitar. For those who never had the opportunity to see or hear
this star shine so brilliantly, and for those who wish to remember,
this final encore deserves a standing ovation. We applaud you, Randy and Ozzy!
