Introduzione
Benvenuto in quello che ha ottime probabilità di essere il primo libro di banjo che hai mai
posseduto. Se lo stai leggendo, significa che sei interessato al banjo bluegrass a cinque corde
- forse ne sei addirittura entusiasta. Probabilmente hai avuto modo di ascoltare il virtuosismo
funky di Earl Scrugg, nella registrazione fatta per la Mercury nel 1950 di Foggy Mountain
Breakdown. Forse hai visto Béla Fleck e i Flecktones infiammare il palco con un miscuglio di
jazz, rock e bluegrass. Forse tuo zio suona in un gruppo bluegrass, e tu ti sei sempre chiesto
come sia possibile suonare così velocemente. Non importa come tu sia arrivato qui: l’importante
è che ora tu ci sia.
Mi sono “ammalato gravemente di banjo” nel 1962, e non ne sono più guarito. Avevo tredici
anni e possedevo una copia del fondamentale metodo per banjo di Pete Seeger. Cercavo di
ottenere qualcosa dalla mia chitarra (che, per disperazione, ero arrivato ad accordare come un
banjo). Quel Natale, i miei genitori mi regalarono un banjo Christy a manico lungo. Per me era
un’icona – perfettamente tondeggiante, con tiranti scintillanti in metallo e corde incredibilmente
lunghe.
A quei tempi non c’era molto materiale didattico disponibile per il banjo, solo il libro di Seeger,
e un testo di Sonny Osborne, degli Osborne Brothers. Ebbi la fortuna, ad ogni modo, di avere
un insegnante che mi seguì. Oggi c’è un gran numero di libri dedicati al banjo, riviste, filmati
e siti Internet, buona parte dei quali ti può fornire una valida introduzione allo strumento. Con
tutto questo ben di Dio in circolazione, sono lieto che tu abbia scelto questo libro per iniziare
il tuo percorso.
Essere un principiante con il banjo è una cosa buona, dato che la curva di apprendimento è
quasi verticale. Questo libro ti condurrà dalle basi ad abilità di livello all’incirca intermedio
con il banjo bluegrass. Lungo il percorso, potresti ritrovarti per un po’ fermo prima di fare il
successivo salto in avanti. Non preoccuparti, ho visto questa situazione migliaia di volte, tanto
in me stesso quanto in altri. Ti sembrerà di non riuscire a progredire oltre, quando all’improvviso
ti scoprirai migliorato. Ricorda di essere paziente.
Questo metodo parte dal presupposto che tu non sappia nulla del banjo. Ad ogni modo, se sai
già suonare uno strumento a corda, sarai avvantaggiato per quanto riguarda la coordinazione
delle mani. Partirai con l’esecuzione in strumming di alcuni accordi, che poi userai in abbinamento
a determinate combinazioni delle dita della mano destra. Successivamente, migliorerai
l’esecuzione delle melodie con tecniche più avanzate come slide, e legati ascendenti e
discendenti (rispettivamente hammer on e pull off), che ti garantiranno vere sonorità bluegrass.
C’è una parte che spiega come esercitarsi, alcune indicazioni su come suonare in chiave di C
e una sezione finale sulla lettura della notazione musicale standard, su pentagramma. Non ha
importanza quanti anni hai - non è mai troppo tardi per iniziare. Ho insegnato tanto a bambini
di dieci anni quanto a persone di una certa età. Se all’inizio ti sembrerà che i risultati lascino a
desiderare, un anno dopo ti accorgerai di suonare meglio. In effetti, non sarebbe una cattiva
idea quella di registrarti quando inizi, come anche successivamente. Riascolta le registrazioni
per renderti conto dei progressi che hai fatto. Ma soprattutto, cosa molto importante, trovati
con altre persone e suona in compagnia. Anche se sai solo eseguire una manciata di accordi e
non vuoi dare fastidio in una jam session, unisciti agli altri e suona. Questo accelererà in modo
significativo il tuo progredire, ti permetterà di assorbire gli spunti proposti in questo libro ed
esalterà la tua gioia di fare musica.

ha suonato con John Denver nella produzione Foxfire (CBS, Hallmark Hall of Fame). Tony è

INTRODUCTION

This new book on the work of Paco de lucia collects transcriptions of his personal compositions and
also arrangements which he made of pieces by other composers.

This book contains transcriptions of pieces from the recordings "Fantasia Ramenca", "12 candones
e Garcia lorca" and "Paco de lucia y Ramon de Algedras en Hispanoamerica": Eight original popular
compositions by the great master like Guajiras de lucia and ElTempul, four arrangements of the songs
by lorca and the famous Tico -Ticofor guitar duo.

David leiva proposes a new way of presenting transcriptions for flamenco guitar. The pieces are
presented ina didactic way so that guitarists of different playing abmties can understand the material.
All of the transcriptions show the written notes, fingering for both hands, dynamics and phrasing, etc.
It is worth noting that these aspects which were commonly notated in the past are not usually included
in current guitar transcriptions. Paco de lucia's musical interpretation is equally important as his
compositions, he is recognized as the genius of flamenco guitar and to learn everything about him is
to learn flamenco guitar. This book presents the dynamics of the great master in order that we can
appredate his interpretative genius.

The new edition of this book includes the most popular song of Paco de luda, Entre dos aguas, which
originally was included in the album "Fuente y Caudal". Inthis transcript have been noted, all notes (notes
and tablature) the dynamics, accents, fingering, accompaniment chord diagrams, several rhythms of
rumba and the introduction of bass adapted for guitar, giving a new and enhanced transcription.

Paco de lucia's genius is not limited only to performance and composition. At the age of 18 together
with Ricardo Modrego he made superb arrangements of songs compiled by the poet Federico Garcia
Lorca, giving a great flamenco spirit to songs which we can consider as part of the classical Spanish
repertoire. They combined the prindpal melodies of those songs with personally composed flamenco
phrases (soled, bulenas, fandangos ... ). This revolutionized flamenco composition with the concept of
creating ideas from an initial melody and transforming it into a flamenco work of the highest level.

These songs are written here in two parts offering for didactic purposes works for duo, which are
currently very scarce in the market. In these pieces, fingerings and dynamics are included for both
guitar voices.

The book finishes with the transcription of the tune Tico-Ticopopularized by the great master together
with his brother Ramon de Algeciras. They performed this piece in a very flamenco way and with
impressive speed.

This book does not cover the accompaniment of flamenco song, another aspect for which Paco de
Lucia is renowned. However this is dealt with in the book "Camaron guitar tab with voice" which shows
the great accompaniment and the dialogue between the two great masters of flamenco of all time,
''Camaron de la Isla y Paco de lucia".

This book has been transcribed by David leiva, author of the collection "Metodo de cante y baile
ftamenco y su acompanamiento", "Suite de flamenco", "Camaron guitar tab with voice", "Combo
flamenco" and "Ramenco Guitar Rhythmic Method". All of this material is included in the collection
''Colecdon pedagogica del flamenco". ln the near future there will be more transcriptions and new
learning methods similar to this material.

BAROQUE LUTE MUSIC FOR GUITAR :
Trascrizioni per chitarra di suite originali per liuto barocco, tratte dai repertori dei migliori liutisti compositori del XVIII secolo, come Sylius Leopold Weiss e Isaias Reusner. Le trascrizioni sono pensate per un tipo particolare di accordatura sviluppata appositamente da Walter Abt per rendere al meglio questo particolare repertorio sulla chitarra acustica.

 

Notes by Walter Abt:
The pieces published in this volume are some of the most beautiful masterpieces by four famous Baroque lute players who created their own composition style.
I have developed a particular guitar tuning for this type of music, which allows for playing pieces written for the lute imitating the lute fingering.
This type of fingering makes it easy to move the left hand on the handle and makes the most of the guitar's resonance.
The different resonance ratio of the instrument enables the music for Baroque lute to be easily played on the guitar with a natural and authentic sound.
This tuning recalls the real handle grip and the way of fretting strings of the compositions for lute, which reduces notably the difficulty level.

Notes on the development of the Suite composition:
The first polyphonic instrumental compositions for lute or vihuela date back to 1500 as Ricercare, Tentos o Fantasias. They are free form of music and are not linked to any specific types of musical movement.
It is only at the dawn of the 17th century that they start to flourish as court balls, when the lute becomes one of the most preferred instruments in the European courts. In the ensemble with other instruments such as the Theorbo, the Chitarrone, the Colachon and the Pandora, the low and continuous sound of the lute dominated these pizzicato instruments.
Due to the composition for lute, the instrumental structures and ornamentation influence the compositions for harpsichord and piano positively, specifically in the form of the fourmovement
sonatas of the 18th century.
The "broken style" with its brilliant ornamentation is considered the vocal guide that changes the contrapuntal sounds. The art of the lute complements the contrapuntal melisma.
In the 16th century in France, it delivers a way of playing diminished at best and within the lute school in Paris of the brothers Jacques and Denis Gaultier it developed a majestic structure and sensation that inspired cembalists such as Rameau, Froberger, Bach and Handel. The lute was worshiped at the court of Louis XIII, even Richelieu took some lessons from Emmenond Gaultier.
Extraordinary pupil of Ennemond Gaultier ("the older"), Francois Dufaut (also Du Faux or Dufault), born around 1600 in Bourges, is one the most outstanding French lutenist. His tablatures for lute were printed in 1638 in the musical publications by Pierre Ballard. In his G-minor Suite Reusner reduced the Gigue Nr. 72 by Dufaut and the thematic similarities confirm the thesis that Dufaut was the maestro of the German luthanist Esaias Reusner between 1651 and 1654.
