The Guitar Wheel is a visual two-sided music theory tool for guitar and piano, covering every musical key. The Guitar Wheel contains a book's worth of music theory, while still fitting in your guitar case. The curved guitar neck design allows for easy visualization of theory on the guitar. This is an excellent teaching aid for schools, colleges, and universities.

Guitar Wheel Quick Start

Let the Quick Start orientation walk you through the multiple uses of the Guitar Wheel.
Things to know about both sides. Turning the Selector tab will synchronize the Guitar Wheel in the key you want to study. Green patterns are major chords, red patterns are minor chords; orange patterns are dimished chords. Notes in the white dots are root notes which also name the chord. Because space is limited, the Guitar Side is written in sharps and the Piano Side in flats.

Master Key. Select "G" in the Master Key Window (see example). The G Major Scale is now displayed in the white dots beginning on the first white string. "G" is the tonic chord.

Fingering. Colored chord patterns are also finger positions to play the chord.

Chord Names. The note in the white dot is the chord name.
Strings and Frets. Frets are numbered in the yellow boxes 1-12: (-12-) is also the nut, or open string. Strings are numbered across in purple (1-6). Notes are displayed at frets in the chord patterns.
Degrees. Tells the degree of the note in the white dot in relation to the tonic or (ptdegree).
Chord Brackets display the chord formula (Root, yd, 5th) of the key's major, minor and diminished chords.

Minor 7th. Use this pattern to find any minor 7th chord (named in the white dot).
Dominant 7th. This green pattern displays the notes in a dominant 7th chord.
Enharmonic Equivalents See yellow sections.
Chord Inversions. See examples of the Root position, 1st inversion, and 2nd inversion of the Tonic Chord and the Relative Minor Chord. All the notes are revealed in this section so your eyes can see other possible chord fingerings.

Select F in the Master Key Window. Now the F Major scale is along the outside edge.
Major Scales begin on the pt degree or Tonic
Transposing Section. In this section you can transpose scales, notes and chords by moving left or right toward the adjacent key.
Chord Brackets identify Root, 3rd and 5th for Major, Minor and Dimished chords.
Relative Minor scales begin at the 6th degree of the Major scales.
Mode Derivatives. The D Aeolian Mode, D Natural Minor, starts at the 6th degree of the F Major scale. Modal scales start at each degree of the major scale.
Major Scales end at the Octive (8th degree).
The dimished 7th note is added for chord building only. (1-13) extended for transposing.

Circle of 4ths and 5ths.
increase sharps and flats in Major & Minor Scales by one.

Concert Pitch.
To be in concert together, instruments play in different keys as indicated.

above or diminished below ascending degrees.
