Introduction
As the diverse cultures of the world have continued to blend together, the results have become very apparent in music. Though each ethnic style has distinct characteristics, contemporary musicians combine styles from many cultures as they develop a sound. Much of today's popular music is greatly influenced by Latin music. The general term "Latin music" is used to describe ethnic music which originated from Africa and developed stylistically in Cuba, the Caribbean, and the countries of South America. Each has a very specific bass feel. As a bass player, it is important to become familiar with these feels. Latin Bass gives you this opportunity. Learn the differences between a bossa nova, a mambo and a cha cha chaoFind out how to playa nanigo, and much more. Each style is examined and demonstrated. Get hands-on experience as you play along with the compact disc included in the book.

About This Book
In order to demonstrate a wide spectrum of Latin bass playing, this book covers ten styles. Each style includes a brief introduction, an example or two of the basic groove, and a play-along song. All songs feature a full band on the compact disc. The bass lines are notated just as they are played on the CD. There are two mixes (versions) of each song; the first includes the bass, and the second does not. After you learn the written bass part, you may choose to create your own lines. This is highly encouraged, as it will help in the learning process.
In addition, for each style there is a short list of artists we recommend for listening. This is only a fraction of the available material, but if you want to learn more about Latin, check out these musicians!
The styles are divided into two groups. The first group is Afro-Cuban, traditions coming from the Caribbean and Cuba. These styles are mambo, cha cha, bolero, nanigo, songo, and merengue. The second group is Brazilian, and consists of samba, bossa nova (4/4 and 3/4), baiao, and partido alto. After studying the material from this book, you will have a fundamental understanding of the Latin bass style. Keep in mind that this is only the beginning. These styles evolved from numerous cultures and can only be fully understood by continued study. It is in your best interest to listen to as many recordings as possible to hear the complex variations that the musicians from these cultures use in their music. Keep practicing, listen to the records, and have fun!

It's been well over three decades since I started playing the guitar. From the outset, my creative point of departure has always been American folk, blues, and old-time country styles. This fascination with our musical roots has persisted throughout my career as a performing and recording artist, writer, and teacher. I've had occasion to playa lot of styles of music, from bluegrass to rockabiIly to contemporary folk ... bar-walkin' R&Bwith sax legend Clifford Scott to Chicago blues with Buddy Guy and full-on rock 'n' roll with Bo Diddley. It always seemed that, no matter what the style, the basic musical vocabulary always came straight from the roots.

I've been a contributing editor to Acoustic Guitar magazine since the publication started in 1990, and, in recent years, I've also served as an instructor/performer at several guitar festivals that the magazine has sponsored in the San Francisco Bay area Whether writing an article or teaching a guitar clinic, my approach to presenting this material encompasses technique, repertoire, and history, along with anecdotes and lore concerning the music and musicians. Roots and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar takes a similar approach, incorporating all these elements into one book and CD.

A large part of this text is an instruction manual for the beginning- and intermediate-level fingerstyle guitarist. Twenty-five tunes are transcribed in tablature and notation along with chord diagrams and explanatory notes. These include my own arrangements for blues, rags, and country themes along with excerpts from the recorded works of some roots guitar pioneers. Specific techniques are pointed out as they occur in the music. The accompanying CDcontains recorded examples from the songs as they are transcribed, played slowly and up to tempo with reference pitches for retuning where needed. Although the material is not necessarily sequenced in order of difficulty, starting with the first chapter and playing through the basics is suggested regardless of experience level.

The balance of the book is history, homily, and hooraw in various combinations. Members of my audiences often tell me that the stories about this music and the many remarkable people and circumstances that have contributed to its development over the years make the songs more real to them. Likewise, students seem more motivated to learn and practice when they feel like the tunes are old friends (which they are). This is good, because learning to play this style is largely a function of dogged, repetitive reptile-brain, your-dinner's-getting-cold practice. The good old southern American big-thumb guitar method is originally a rural art, so it doesn't take a socio-ethnologist to figure out that the early practitioners were farmers like Mance Lipscomb and Sam McGee. Pitching hay or plowing with a mule isn't as easy on the mitts as a pre-recital warm-up; but what they lacked in interdigital articulation, the inventors of twang made up in pure squeeze powerNwhich came in handy at barn dances and country suppers where the first set was three hours long. Times have changed, but the musical work ethic persists. The express train and church bells sound of "Buckdancer's Choice" or the sledgehammer Delta crunch of "Roll and Tumble" doesn't cascade from the box with the first love pat. One way I've found to keep things jolly while working on the cusp of carpal tunnel syndrome is to recall a few of the things I've heard or experienced over the years while passing up hot meals and paychecks to verify drawled rumors about primal string noise to be heard at the fourth house after the pavement stops. So these pages include excerpts from the well-thumbed old travel guide that leads to this music. When their honky-tonk and rock 'n' roll progeny came down the road with the first electric line, some of these tunes were already rocking on the porch saying: "What took you so long?" The Acoustic Guitar Method teaches you how to play guitar using the techniques and songs of American roots music. Beginning with a few basic chords and strums, you'll start right in learning real music drawn from blues, folk, country, and bluegrass traditions. Working in both standard music notation and a special system for guitar called tablature, you'll learn how to find notes on the fingerboard by using them in particular song arrangements. You'll use different kinds of picking patterns and expand your collection of chords by learning songs in various keys. And as your knowledge of the fingerboard expands, you'll solidify that knowledge by picking out the melodies to the tunes you're working on. When you're done with the Acoustic Guitar Method, you'll know dozens of the tunes that form the backbone of American music and be able to play them using a variety of flat picking and fingerpicking techniques.

WHY ACOUSTIC GUITAR? The acoustic guitar is an incredibly flexible instrument. With just a few chords under your fingers you can play dozens of traditional and popular tunes; with time and effort, you can take the same instrument to virtuosic heights. The acoustic guitar knows few stylistic limits: everything from Lester Flatt's bluegrass backup to John Hurt's country blues fingerpicking, from the Everly Brothers' percussive rock strumming to Leo Kottke's supercharged slide workouts, has been done on essentially the same instrument. You can make music on an acoustic guitar all by yourself or use it as a songwriting tool, and since you can play both rhythm and lead, it's a great instrument for bands and jamming as well. The amount and variety of music that's made on the acoustic guitar is staggering. Country, blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, rock-acoustic guitar lies at the heart of all these styles. You may find yourself wanting to check out a little bit of everything. Or maybe one style will grab your attention and not let go. No matter where your interests lead you, you'll be expanding your ears, strengthening your fingers, and learning more about music and your instrument.

WHY ROOTS MUSIC? The various genres collectively referred to as roots music are all very much alive, and the guitar is very much a part of those traditions. Whether you're revved up about learning fingerstyle blues, bluegrass flatpicking, basic country backup, or western swing, it all starts with the same fundamentals. Learning tunes is a practical and fun way to acquire a chord vocabulary, practice strumming techniques, learn about picking and playing single notes, and apply picking patterns to real-world situations. We've chosen the traditional tunes in this series for their variety and accessibility and because they are great songs and a blast to play. These songs are survivors

THE COMPLETE ACOUSTIC GUITAR METHOD

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT

The dreadnought is the standard acoustic guitar shape, a relatively large, squarish design developed by C.F. Martin around 1916; nearly every guitar company now makes dreadnought-style instruments. There are also numerous smallerbodied instrument styles, often based on older designs by Martin or Gibson and variously referred to as parlor, concert, or simply small-bodied guitars. These are often easier to hold and to wrap your arms around as a beginner than the bulkier dreadnought or the equally large jumbo instruments based on Gibson's various models of that name. Different styles and shapes of instruments do sound different from one another, but right now the most important issue is comfort, so get something that feels like it fits your body. While we're on the subject, keep in mind that you can make music on any instrument. Many musicians use a variety of guitars over the course of their lives or keep a few instruments to change their sound on stage, in the studio, or at home. Much of the earliest country and blues music was made with whatever instruments were available or affordable at the time. People played cheap Stella, Harmony, or hand-me-down guitars because that's what they had, and they made music that's still worth listening to decades later. In our own era, there are more and more good, inexpensive guitars being produced all the time, making it easier than ever to find a comfortable, reasonably priced, good-sounding beginner instrument. Whether you get something new or secondhand, have the shop where you buy it or a recommended repair shop do a setup before you get started. That basically means adjusting the neck for the most comfortable action, or distance between the strings and the fretboard, putting on a fairly light gauge of strings, and checking the intonation (that is, making sure your guitar plays in tune all the way up the neck), which may involve adjustments to the saddle and/or the nut. (Aren't you glad you looked over that illustration on page 5)

HOLDING THE GUITAR

The standard sitting pose for playing acoustic guitar has the guitar resting on your right leg. Your right arm can drape over the lower bout of the guitar, with the instrument fitting snugly in the crook of your arm. That should leave your right hand dangling somewhere between the bridge and the sound hole, or right at the soundhole's edge, when you go to strum or pick. If you're planning to stand up, you might want to have a strap button attached to the heel of the neck. It doesn't have the same Woody Guthrie-esque hobo look as tying a piece of string around the headstock, but it centers the guitar's body on you a bit better and ensures a more stable placement of the instrument. Keep your left-hand thumb along the back of the neck, wherever it feels most comfortable. It can creep up over the top, past the fingerboard, as long as it's not actually touching the low string and keeping it from ringing out when you strum. Be sure to keep your fingers arched, with each joint bent; if they flatten out across the strings they will also flatten the sound when you strum.
