Playing Guitar in Jazz Band is for beginning to intermediate guitarists who are interested in playing in a jazz big band. Playing this style of guitar can be challenging, as the chord changes are often complex, yet the guitar parts should remain simple enough to avoid detracting from the overall sound of the band. This book breaks down that process by substituting difficult chord shapes with more flexible voicings that are designed to sound good on the guitar. Learn a wide variety of rhythmic patterns and work with authentic chord charts that are exactly like the ones you will encounter in real-life situations. This is the perfect crash course for students who have just joined their first jazz band and the ideal companion for music teachers who want to better understand the role of the guitar in their ensemble. A CD demonstrating the examples in the book is included.

Introduction

So, you've joined a jazz band (sometimes called a big band, stage band, or jazz ensemble). Even if you've been a guitar player for a while, you're probably finding some of this music quite different from anything you've played before-a lot of chords going by kind of quickly-right? That's because the sound of big band jazz comes from the cool harmonies generated by the horn sections. Even when the individual horn parts are quite simple, the combined harmonies can be quite complex, making the guitar and piano parts a bit of a challenge. This book is designed as a practical guide for playing in a jazz band. The emphasis is on shortcuts that work in the real world, not complicated theory. You'll learn how to simplify complicated chord charts to suit your current level of ability and chord knowledge. To get the most out of this book, it will be helpful (but not absolutely necessary) to be able to read standard music notation. You need to know basic skills such as tuning the guitar, fretting notes and chords with your left hand, and picking and strumming with your right hand. There are two parts to this book. Part 1 will try to make your life a little easier by presenting some chord voicings and shortcuts to help you get through the musical charts. Part 2 shows you how to add to the basics as you get more comfortable with the pieces you are playing. You may find that these voicings and shortcuts sound better with the band than the fuller voicings you might use in a smaller group. The chord voicings used in this book, particularly in Part 1, are based on the technique used by legendary guitarist Freddie Green of the Count Basie Orchestra. Some band directors encourage guitarists to play chord voicings in a higher register and stay away from the bass. While this is certainly a valid approach-and one that is very effective in small jazz groups-it puts you in'the range of the horns and piano. This makes it necessary to play the extensions and alterations in the chord, as well as eliminate the root of the chord or place it on middle strings. For the novice player, the method in this book will be a lot easier to grasp, since the root will generally be on the bass strings and easier to find, and the shortcuts will enable the player to keep up with the band. Unlike playing in a rock, folk, or country band, the role of the guitar in a big band is primarily to work with the drummer to set up a solid groove, rather than establish the harmonies (which are being played by horns and piano). For example, instead of letting the chords ring, we damp them between the strokes for a more percussive effect (see Chapter 7 for more details). This book deals with the rhythm guitar aspect of stage band playing, or chording, which is mostly what you will be doing. To learn the lead guitar aspect of jazz, refer to a book such asTom Dempsey's Easy Soloing for Jazz Guitar (Alfred/National Guitar Workshop #28246).

How to Use This Book

I suggest you go through Part 1, learning the material in each chapter. If you spend 15 minutes a day, you should be pretty competent in two or three weeks. Then, have a look through Part 2 so you know what's there, but don't try to learn all the chord voicings at once. Gradually, add a few voicings at a time as you encounter them in the pieces you are playing with the band.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK GUITAR GLENN RILEY CD TABLATURE CHITARRA METODO LIBRO BOOK SPARTITI

PROGRESSIVE ROCK GUITAR
BY GLENN RILEY

CATEGORY: GUITAR METHOD OR SUPPLEMENT
FORMAT: BOOK & CD

FROM THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY INTO THE NEW MILLENIUM, SOME BANDS HAVE STRETCHED THE LIMITS OF ROCK. THE GREAT PROGRESSIVE ROCK ARTISTS OF THE WORLD SUCH AS YES, KIM CRIMSON, QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER, AND SYMPHONY X HAVE EXPANDED THE POSSIBILITIES, EXPLORING ELEMENTS OF CLASSICAL, JAZZ AND OTHER STYLES WHILE MAINTAINING THE EXCITEMENT AND EDGE OF ROCK. THIS BOOK PROVIDES A LOOK AT THE INNER WORKINGS OF THIS MUSIC, PROVIDING THE TOOLS AND INSPIRATION YOU NEED TO CREATE YOUR OWN PROGRESSIVE ROCK SOUND. YOU'LL LEARN FASCINATING CHORDS, ODD TIME SIGNATURES, METRIC AND HARMONIC MODULATIONS, EXOTIC SCALES AND ADVANCED GUITAR SOLOING CONCEPTS.
FINALLY, HERE IS GUIDANCE FOR THE GUITARIST WHO'S READY TO RISE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CONFINES OF SIMPLE ROCK 'N' ROLL AND PUSH THE BOUNDARIES WHERE FEW DARE TO GO. THE CD DEMONSTRATES THE EXAMPLES IN THE BOOK. 96 PAGES.

Welcome to Progressive Rock Guitar. This book is designed to open up a world of music and guitar technique that goes beyond the normal boundaries of rock. It covers a variety of areas in progressive rock guitar playing including chords and chord progressions, odd meter and syncopated rhythm, scales and soloing strategies and how to put it all together. This book assumes you have a solid knowledge of music notation and! or tablature, major and minor pentatonic scales, modes of the major scale, basic theory such as diatonic harmony and chord construction, lead guitar techniques such as sweep picking, legato and so on. Books such as The Guitar Technique Encyclopedia and Theory for the Contemporary Guitarist would be good companions to this one. Many prog rock guitarists use an assortment of guitar tones. To perform many of the examples in this book, either (or both) a clean or a distorted guitar tone is required. Use an amplifier that can provide both clean and distorted tones with a footswitch, or set your amp to a clean sound and use a distortion effect pedal. Most of the etudes require you switch from one sound to the other while playing. Having the right amp set-up will help you do so. Most progressive rock music is composed, then memorized and performed by the artists. While being able to read the examples is important, you will need to memorize most of the etudes to play them fluently. The CD that accompanies this book has all the examples along with backing tracks for jamming. Progressive rock (often called "art rock") is based on experimentation. It borrows heavily from other styles of music-such as classical, jazz, blues and fusion-to make a "musical goulash." Progressive rock emerged in the late 1960s with acts such as King Crimson, Yes, Iron Butterfly and Jethro Tull, who paved the way for many prog rockers to come. These groups composed epic-length pieces of music with themed lyrical concepts and extended solos, while experimenting (and breaking rules) in the areas of harmony and rhythm. These extensive, artistic musical sculptures found little radio play, but developed a cult-like following. Prog rock groups such as Rush, Kansas and Genesis moved forward in the 1970s and '80s and found more commercial success than their predecessors. The music of many heavy metal bands, such as Queensryche and Fates Warning, had a progressive edge. Progressive solo artists such as Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, all with unique voices, also emerged in the 1980s. The 1990s and the new millennium found bands such as Dream Theater and Spock's Beard spearheading a "neo progressive" movement. These bands go about finding new ways to go beyond the old limits and progress along musical pathways that have no boundaries. I hope you do the same.

INTRODUZIONE

ROCK GUITAR FOR ADULTS. CD TABLATURE

LIBRO DI MUSICA METODO CON CD.

SPARTITI PER CHITARRA CON ACCORDI, PENTAGRAMMA E TABLATURE

Introduction
For many adults, playing guitar is a
long-time dream that is routinely put aside
for more pressing concerns. After all,
what's more important, dusting off that old
Martin in your attic or getting your kids to
the dentist on time? But our personal
dreams can't be put aside forever, and true
believers will never stop chasing them. So,
if you've been wanting to get a good start
at rock guitar for a long time and you've
decided that you're finally going to do it,
this book is for you.
There are two appendices at the back of -;
this book. Appendix A on page 88 is a
quick review of reading music. Appendix
B on page 92 is a basic theory lesson.
Reading the appendices before going
through the book will be very helpful.
I grew up on the music of Pink Floyd, Alice
Cooper, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple,
The Grateful Dead and all of those other
great bands we've come to know and
love. Rock music has always impressed

me as being a unique art in that it lovingly
embraces everything ittouches. It's hardly
an exclusive club. After all, where else can
one find The London Philharmonic
Orchestra, Sid Vicious, Indian sitar music,
blues, jazz, funk and sheer noise all in the
same "style"?
Rock music is a bigger part of modern
culture than many people would care to
admit. It keeps our laborers pumping
through long hard days, increasing
productivity and melting away those
tedious hours. It's a big part of kicking
back on the weekends and enjoying down
time with our friends. It makes the old
feel younger and helps the young to feel
strong and alive. But, most importantly,
its study is endlessly challenging and
stimulating, and can be a true path to
self-discovery. I hope this book helps to
make your rock'n'roll dreams come true.
Rock on!

Licks in every substyle of punk including the New York scene, the LA scene, the London scene, thrash and grunge, with detailed information about important artists and their contributions. All licks are shown in standard music notation and TAB and demonstrated on the CD.

This book is devoted to teaching you how to put some punk in your guitar playing. While even beginning-level players will enjoy using this book, it does assume you have some experience reading standard music notation and TAB.

The term "punk" can be a bit confusing. What are the differences between "thrash," "oi," "hardcore," "emo," "ska," "new wave," "glam" and "old school," all of which-and more-have been used to describe musical splinters of the punk style. Everyone knows what punk rockers look like. They ride skateboards on St. Mark's Place in Manhattan or Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. They lean against walls at your local mall. Everyone's seen them: kids with attitudes, sporting brightly colored mohawks, black leathers, chains and tattoos. You can spot them from across a parking lot. Their message is clear-they're punks. But punk isn't just a look. It's also a widespread subculture and a group of definable musical styles. This music may be best described by first saying what it is not. Punk is usually not funky and it is equally distant from classical music. It's not pretty and it won't sooth an infant like a waltz played on a tiny music box. It is the opposite of these things-it is fast, loud, crude music. This high-energy rock music intends to shock, amaze and disgust the listener by any means possible. Punk music is typified by the pulse-pounding styles of bands such as The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and Nirvana. The earliest glimmerings of punk rock began in the late 1960s and early '70s with the emergence of Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. But, the nihilistic anarchy we now call "punk" didn't fully crystallize until the mid I970s, when the "first wave" of punk was in full swing. This first wave began in Manhattan with bands such as The New York Dolls, The Ramones, The Vibrators and The Dead Boys. It quickly spread to London where it became a much stronger force. Some early UK bands were The Sex Pistols, The Jam,The Buzzcocks and The Clash. Other scenes popped up all over the world. Los Angeles was very significant, spawning The Germs, The Circle Jerks, NOFX, X, Black Flag and many others. The L.A. hardcore scene even stayed alive through the metal-soaked I980s, helping to bridge the gap between the first and second waves of punk. The constant touring of first-wavers such as The Ramones, The Clash and 999 also helped to keep punk alive during this, its most difficult period. The second big wave of punk was popularized in Seattle, Washington by Nirvana in 1992.This new punk was aptly named "grunge" and inspired bands in California such as Green Day, The Offspring and Blink 182. Grunge lionized the shoe gazing, flannel clad slackers of the I 990s. It was only a slight variation on '70s punk. The music, though imbued with modern production values retained the same high energy and deliberate amateurism. Grunge brought punks their first American chart-topping successes. Punk grew wildly popular, becoming a large part of the new mainstream. Punk is a powerful force in rock music and pop culture. Its influence is felt everywhere from the cinema to the cyber world, to literature, art and even your own music store or mall. Punk's colorful history is clearly still unfolding, and will continue to shock and amaze us for many years to come. This book explores the role of the electric guitar in that history.

Get started in this book today and become everybody's favorite accompanist. CD TABLATURE

As a guitar teacher, I have noticed that many students, from the novice to the advanced, ask similar questions about chords. This book was written in response to those questions. I saw the need for a book that would dig into the "street knowledge" of simple guitar chords: easy chord theory, sweet chord substitution ideas, embellishments for accompaniments, picking and strumming patterns, alternate tunings and many other topics. This book assumes that you already play the guitar and have a basic knowledge of chords, hammer-ons, pull-offs and other basic techniques. There is a quick review of reading standard music notation and TAB, and other concepts are covered as the book continues. If you have gaps in your knowledge, these explanations will help you use the book. The information in this book was acquired by studying the techniques of many great players the world over, as well as by personal trial and error. In order for you to use this information most efficiently, I suggest that you work on a small amount of material at a time. Whether you're a performing songwriter, a band member, an accompanist, a campfire strummer or just a weekend picker, you should grab a few ideas at a time and experiment with them for awhile before you come back for more.

This book contains lessons on:

Easyways to play "hard" chords.

How to "spice up" open position chords you've played for years.

How to play those chord embellishments you've heard on recordings for years but never

knew how to play.

The basic theory of chord progressions.

An overview of chord families, or which chords go with which keys.

How best to use a capo.

Voice leading, or the movement of notes between chords.

Fingerpicking patterns that will work well in your accompaniments.

Strumming techniques and styles.

Chord cadences, or "endings for songs."

Hammer-on and pull-off licks within chords.

A quick and easy (but still inspiring) introduction to alternate tunings.

A guide for accompanists and songwriters.

An introduction to blues ideas and slide technique.

Several helpful tunes to play that put the techniques you learn to practical use.

CAGED

Make sure that you know the five chord forms* below before you get started. Together, the names of these chords form the word CAGED. These chord shapes will be fundamental to some ideas that will be covered in this book.

NOTE:

This book is full of great ideas for players of all levels. There are hundreds of examples for strumming and picking. Although some of the music notation and chord diagrams may look difficult, they aren't. Just be patient as you look at each diagram. They are very detailed and descriptive. You'll find the playing is fun and easy. Enjoy!
