8-BAR BLUES: A SELECT HISTORY

Eight-bar blues became popular in the era of the "classic women blues singers," in the Twenties,
long before 12-bar blues became the norm, in the Thirties. It appears that 8-bar blues existed in the
South years before the first commercial blues recordings and possibly during the formative years of both blues and jazz, in the 1890s. By extension, American popular music, particularly prior to rock 'n' roll in the Fifties, was often based on 8-measure progressions that were arranged into 32-measure song forms.
In a spoken introduction to a live performance of "Sc James Infirmary" at Louis Armstrong's Town
Hall concert in New York City in 1947, jazz trombonist Jack Teagarden referred to the song as the "oldest blues I ever heard." Not coincidentally, it contains an 8-bar progression:

"Gamblers Blues," a song that can be traced back to 1899, seems to be a precedent for "St. James
Infirmary," though the original derivation possibly goes back even further, to old English ballads. Note that measures 1 and 2 contain the I chord (because the chord is minor, it's a i chord, while the A 7 is just a quick V-chord substitution), a common occurrence in many 8-bar blues.
An early recorded 8-bar blues, and a subsequent classic, is Bessie Smith's "Taint Nobody's Bizness
If We Do" from April 1923. The last four measures of the arrangement reflect elements that are not only common to future 8- and 12-bar blues, but jazz as well:

Sylvester Weaver, the first African-American blues guitarist to record with vocalist Sara Martin, in
November 1923, waxed a clever instrumental ditty in April 1927 called "Damfino Stomp" (pronounced
"damn if I know"), which contains several eight-bar verse variations:

Lonnie Johnson, arguably the most influential guitarist of the 20th century, recorded an eight-bar
duet with a pianist in October 1927 named "6/88 Glide":

Wes Montgomery took jazz guitar to a new level when he came to the public's attention in the late 1950's. BIOGRAPHY

As a chart topping jazz guitarist and recording artist, a composer of over 200 published songs, network television show themes and scores, a producer of over 30 world renowned recording artists. and an in-demand clinician and educator, CHUCK LOEB is increasingly known as a true music world renaissance man.
With the February, 2005 Shanachie Records release When I'm With You marking his fourteenth CD, Chuck has attained the much-sought-after position in the jazz world as a musical artist with his own instantly recognizable sound.
Also a seasoned studio musician with thousands of sessions to his credit ranging from film scores, jazz to pop, rock and roll to Broadway, and classical to ethnic music, sound has always been a central focus in Chuck's musical journey which was greatly influenced by Stan Getz, the jazz saxophone giant who gave Chuck one of his first and most important 'name band' associations.
Chuck grew up in Nyack, NY, the suburb of New York City that was a perfect environment for a young person with an interest in music. He soon discovered that the area was home to numerous professional musicians who worked in the city, as well as a center for many arts, music, and performance education programs. It was in these surroundings and at the age of eleven that Chuck made what would tum out to be one of his most important decisions: to make music his life's work. Self taught for several years, Chuck began working with local bands when he was thirteen, and quickly became an in-demand musician for myriad engagements throughout the YC metropolitan area. Chuck was also exposed to jazz during this time, and decided that in order to reach the level he strove for, he would need to study formally. Along with local teachers Richie HaI1 and Hy White, Chuck traveled as far as Philadelphia to study with jazz "Guru" Dennis Sandole who eventually recommended that Chuck become a pupil of the legendary jazz guitarist Jim Hall in New York City.
After studying with Mr. Hall for the last two years of high school, Chuck enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Two years of intense study at Berklee would greatly enrich Chuck's talents and musical knowledge as a guitarist '" , composer and arranger. The lure of professional work led to his departure from the school in 1976 when he toured the world with pop singer Gloria Gaynor, and made his move into New York City itself. Throughout his early years there he began to make a name for himself as a sideman with jazz luminaries such as drummer Chico Hamilton, Latin
percussionist and band leader Ray Barreto, flautist Hubert Laws, and others. He also continued his musical studies , often practicing up to 8 hours each day.
In 1979 Chuck was asked to join the Stan Getz band. This proved to be a pivotal experience both musically and personally. As a member of Stan's group, and the composer of much of the band's repertoire, he had the chance to tour the world and perform at many of the world's major festivals, jazz clubs and concert venues. Eventually Chuck became the musical director of the group and it was also during this time that he met and married his wife Carmen Cuesta, a popular vocalist and songwriter from Madrid, Spain.
After leaving the Getz ensemble, Chuck resettled in New York and began to pursue a career as a studio musician. For the next several years, he logged thousands of hours in the studios recording, composing, and producing albums, soundtracks, jingles and television-show themes (Chuck is the composer of the ABC News Nightline, One Life To Live and CNN Network signature themes among many others). It was also during this period that Chuck began to expand his talents as a producer, which would soon become another major focus of his career.
A member of the popular jazz-fusion group Steps Ahead with Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Peter Erskine, and Victor Bailey, Chuck returned to the festivals and stages of the jazz world and decided to concentrate on his own music. In 1988.
after nearly ten years of uninterrupted studio work, Chuck began to develop his own recording career. His first recordino as a solo artist was for the Japanese label Jazz City with a critically-acclaimed CD titled My Shining Hour. Soon after, he signed a recording contract with DMP, the groundbreaking audiophile label which was one of the first to release their artists on compact disc. After recording five CD's with that company, Chuck left to sign with the famed world music and jazz record label Shanachie. It was with the release of his 1996 debut on Shanachie, The Music Inside, that Chuck began to reach a significantly wider audience. The title song from the CD reached the #1 position and remained there for six weeks, and since then Chuck has produced, composed and performed over twenty # I and Top 10 songs along with at least seven Top 20 albums as a leader.
Chuck continues to do clinics and instruction in major music schools and universities across the globe. His focus is currently to increase his involvement in the world of musie education as he feels his over three decades of experience as a multi-faceted music professional gives him the ideal background to educate music students as to what is needed to succeed in the industry.
A much-sought-after concert and club headliner and recognized as among the world's premier jazz guitarists, Chuck regularly collaborates with his wife Carmen Cuesta Loeb on her own CD's and live performances, and is a regular member of the fusion group Metro. He has two daughters and continues to live, compose and record in the New York area.
