Standard Tuning Slide Guitar is a compilation of slide guitar techniques accumulated by author and über-guitarist Greg Koch for over 30 years. With detailed notation and tablature for over 100 playing examples and video demonstrations, Koch demonstrates how to play convincing blues, rock, country, and gospel-tinged slide guitar while in standard tuning by using techniques and approaches that emulate common altered slide tunings, such as open E or open G. Drawing from a well of influences, from Blind Willie Johnson and Elmore James to Duane Allman and Sonny Landreth, Greg will show you how to create these slide guitar sounds in standard tuning while also providing ideas to inspire the development of your own style.

Standard Tuning Slide Guitar is a compilation of standard-tuned slide techniques accumulated by the author for over 30 years. The point of this book is to demonstrate how to play convincing blues, rock, country, and gospel-tinged slide guitar while in standard tuning by using techniques and approaches that will make you sound, at times, as though you are in other tunings, such as open E or open G. Drawing from a well of influences, from Blind Willie Johnson and Elmore James to Duane Allman and Sonny Landreth, the author will show you how to achieve some of these sounds in standard tuning and will hopefully provide ideas that inspire the development of your own style.

Thve, You Witt Need GUITAR. An acoustic or electric guitar will work for these lessons. Some approaches might be demonstrated with one or the other, but all of the techniques referenced can be performed on either electric or acoustic guitar. A steel-string acoustic guitar sounds great with slide. The size of the body will affect the tone and volume of the guitar, but it is totally a matter of personal preference. The quality of the instrument should not hinder the student, as most of the classic old blues recording like Robert Johnson's were probably done on inexpensive guitars. Although a famous picture shows him playing a Gibson L-1, many sources say he usually played a Stella or Kalamazoo and most likely recorded with one of those guitars. A guitar with a resonator, such as a metal-bodied National or a round-necked Dobro, are often used for slide. In the days before amplification, resonators were popular guitars among bluesmen because they gave them a louder, more nasal tone, which was easier to hear than a regular acoustic guitar. They do sound great with slide, and there are many affordable options out there these days, but it is not necessary to have one to play effective acoustic slide guitar. Electric guitars with humbucicing pickups sound great when playing slide, as the thicker, louder sound of these guitars helps the notes sustain a bit better right out of the gate. Guitars with single-coil pickups will get a much glassier tone but often need the tube compression of an amp turned up a bit, or an overdrive or compression pedal, to add a little more "meat° and sustain so the notes can sing a little longer than a straight clean sound would allow. In this day and age, there are many affordable solid-state and digital amplifiers that provide a wide variety of tones and sound good at a whisper volume. Conventional wisdom dictates that tube-powered amps will deliver the most organic tone and widest dynamic control, but it is entirely up to the player. The music doesn't care one way or the other!

INTRODUCTION

What clues?" you may ask. Well, my friends, instead of just bombarding you with a deluge of theory and a myriad of scales, both of which usually numb the average soul into a state of selfdeprecating perplexity (often exemplified by a vacuous expression and a dab of drool around the corners of the mouth), I will "clue" you in to a bevy of tasty morsels which you can immediately apply to lead and/or rhythm playing, which will inspire you to play better guitar. What a concept! By taking one of the most basic improvisatory tools, the pentatonic scale, and employing all the powers of minutia, you shall accumulate a host of ideas and nuances that, demonstrated in sample improvisations over guitar rhythm tracks which are also transcribed, will have you playing more inspired lead and rhythm guitar from the first few pages. Whether you are somewhat new to improvising or have been doing it for a while, you will harvest golden info-nuggets that you can put to use right away, from volume swells to chicken-pickin' to intervallic and chordal ideas. All of these things are shown in a universally-applicable bluesy environment that gradually adds cool skills to basic concepts, which not only makes it easy to use effectively right away but also makes it easy to explain to others, if you are so inclined. A host of other facts and tidbits are thrown in to clue you in on everything from keeping your guitar in tune to jam etiquette inspired by the onslaught of questions received by the author at clinics, at gigs, and on the internet. This is not a beginner's book, nor is it a grand thesis on improvisatory complexity, but folks on both ends of the spectrum can learn something from it!

BLUES JAM ETIQUETTE

Playing
with other live human beings is the best way to get your timing together, to learn to develop solos, to get an understanding of dynamics, to get a tone happening, and so on. If getting your own band together to either rehearse and/or perform is not practical at the moment, going to a blues jam at a local club is not a bad idea. It is important, however, to be familiar with some of the rules of engagement to avoid an unpleasant experience (although some are seemingly unavoidable, but do not let that deter you!). First of all, make certain that it is an "open jam" before bringing in your guitar and stating a desire to sit in. Going into a club, no matter how unassuming it may seem, and asking to sit in with a random band on a random night is a recipe for disaster. It may be no big deal, or it may be like asking some stranger to let you dance with his wife. Why chance it? Once the jam has been sussed, be apprised that the band leader hosting the jam can range from 1) a benevolent soul who enjoys playing with other musicians so much that he has decided to provide an opportunity to jam with friends and to nurture fledgling instrumentalists on an off night for a nominal fee to 2) a bitter bar-band grifter who wants to enjoy another evening of free drinks and the opportunity to humiliate lesser-qualified musicians over endless renditions of tunes like "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Mustang Sally." Sometimes these two descriptions can apply to the same individual from one week to the next! So, beware! Inform the leader of the jam of your desire to sit in. Do not give him your history up to that point, your favorite bands or nostril circumference. If you have a mutual acquaintance that is genuine, mention it and this may save you the trouble of waiting for three hours to play. Other than that, he or she will probably ask you if you can sing. If you can, it means they can take a break and go to the bar, so the likelihood of you getting up sooner than later is good. If you don't sing, grab a seat because it could be a while, and lay low on the sauce. A drunken musician is about as en vogue as a leisure suit. When you finally get up to jam, make sure you are in tune, and it is helpful if you have your own guitar cord. Most jams have amps ready to go and some folks get a little weird if you walk in with your own amp, but keep one in the trunk just in case. One of the members of the house band will probably be up there with you but sometimes they will just call up people on the different instruments and let you figure it out from there. Whoever is singing will shout out "this is a shuffle in A" or "slow one in E from the V," or else they will just blast off, and you are expected to hang on for dear life. Whatever you do, be sensitive even if the others are barbarians. Watch your volume, be attentive for cues and listen, listen, listen. When given a solo, the unwritten law is to take two choruses or twenty-four bars. You may be egged on to do more, or they may cut you off after one chorus. Watch and listen. The other unwritten rule is to play two tunes and get off. Some may stay longer because they are friends of the band or whatever, but two tunes is usually the norm. After a few of these jams you will have sussed out the posers from the folks who just want to play and get better, and you may even find potential band mates. If you use the above as a warning, if anything. you should be able to weather the phenomenon that is the blues jam. Thanks folks, and stay tuned for more Guitar Clues!

INTRODUCTION

Do you find yourself reaching for the same chord shapes again and again when you pick up a guitar? What if someone asks you to "play something bluesy" on a G chord-do you know what to do? How would you like to spice up your rhythm guitar playing, make your parts more authentic, or maybe just get some new ideas? Rhythm Riffs is a unique book designed for the intermediate to advanced guitarist to increase your playing vocabulary exponentially. Whether you're playing in a band, writing songs, accompanying others, or just jamming with friends, there's so much more you can do-other than strum!-when playing rhythm guitar.

ABOUT THE RIFFS
What is a "riff?" A riff is a rhythmic theme that can contain single notes or chords. What goes into a riff can really depend on the style of music or even the particular player. A riff can include any of these elements:
• unique chord voicing(s)
• distinctive rhythm(s)
• hammer-ons/pull-offs
• fills & ornaments
• passing tones & chords
• unusual playing techniques
• other embellishments

The possibilities are nearly endless!
When it comes right down to it, most songs are the same. That is, they're all based on chords. What makes one song-or style, or artist-different from another, is what they do with those chords. This is where Rhythm Riffs comes in.
Each riff in this book is based on a simple chord-like A, Em, G7, etc. The chord label doesn't necessarily reflect the actual voicing used; it just shows you what type of chord you may want to play the riff over. This means you can start "plugging in" the riffs right away-putting them into songs, grooves, jams, whatever.
But here's where things get really interesting: Each riff isn't just played once. Instead, through various stylistic nuances, each riff is "morphed" into five different genres of music: rock, blues, jazz, country, and funk.* This gives you an option for just about any style you could possibly play! With twelve major riffs, twelve minor riffs, and twelve dominant seventh riffs, plus the five stylistic variations for each, you've got 180 potential riffs for bolstering your rhythm guitar vocabulary. The last section of the book features eight variations on the 12-bar blues, also done in various styles, which provide interesting rhythmic ideas and chord voicings for this most popular and highly used song form. Folk, R&B, and pop are occasional alternate styles.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
There is no right or wrong way to use this book. Some players may want to play each riff in its entirety; others will want to pick and choose just a few chord voicings or techniques out of various riffs. Some players may want to focus on one particular style and learn only those riffs. The option is always yours. If you started the book at the beginning, it would take you quite a while to get to some of the ideas at the end. Therefore, you may want to "preview" the book first: Listen to the CD while following along with the book, and keep track of the selections that you like. Make those your first playing priority. On the CD, each riff is played twice (fast, then slow); the total CD length is just over an hour. Track 45 contains tuning notes.

HOW TO PRACTICE
When learning the riff selections, practice them along at a speed at which you can play flawlessly. If you try to play them fast too soon, the "slop factor" can be too great. (Always give yourself plenty of time to learn each riff; there's a lot of them here and the tendency may be to rush, but each riff is worth taking your time with.) Using a metronome is very helpful for gradually speeding up pieces that you are trying to learn. Start at a reasonable tempo, and as your skill dictates, increase the tempo. When trying to apply the riffs, some incubation time is again a good idea. It may help you to have certain tunes in mindperhaps a song for which you're having trouble finding fresh rhythm ideas. You can try the riffs at your next band rehearsal, record them as you playa tune to see how they sound, play along with records, or whatever it takes to feel conversant with them. Never force a riff, though; strive to make your playing musical. When something works, you'll know it. The 12-bar variations at the end of the book can be used in their entirety or can be cross-mutated by joining some of the different variations together. The idea is to give you a strong rhythmic vocabulary for com ping a blues in any genre.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
There are two specialized (right-hand) techniques used in this book on occasion-most often in the country-style riffs-that may require a little explaining before we proceed. One is Travis-style picking, and the other is chicken pickin'.
The Travis-style selections in this book are written as two parts like the example below. The lower part can be played with the thumb, while the higher register can be played with the first and second fingers. A hybrid picking ("pick & fingers") approach may also be employed by playing the lower register with your pick while your middle and ring fingers catch the other notes. In either case, muting the lower notes with the palm of your picking hand gives the desired rhythmic approach for this style.

Chicken pickin' means different things to different people, but it basically involves using muting of one form or another to achieve a "clucking"-type sound indicative of a lot of great country guitarists. The muting used to produce chicken pickin', as it occurs in this book, can best be explained with the example below. The three notes of the first A chord are simultaneously plucked by the index, middle, and ring fingers. These same fingers are immediately used to dampen the strings, and the thumb is used to pluck the open A string (which is being muted by the index finger) to produce the "cluck." By rapidly going back and forth between the open chord and the muffled "cluck," your chicken pickin' sequence begins to take shape.
