INTRODUCTION

Elliott Smith said that the Beatles' multi-faceted White Album inspired him to be a musician, so it's not surprising that the six albums he released during his short life (1969-2003) reveal an eclectic, varied musical taste. Pop, folk, classical, and punk sensibilities abound. Lyrically, the songs are full of pain, disillusionment, and despair, but also beauty, humor, and sometimes hope. Above all, the nihilism and anguish of his words are belied by the musical craftsmanship he poured into his compositions and performances, both live and recorded. He wrote every song on his albums, played most of the instruments, sang all the lead vocals, and most of the vocal harmonies. The obvious commitment he made to his art is in itself a statement of hope and value. In the early 1990s, when Smith's band Heatmiser was building a following in Portland, his girlfriend talked him into sending a demo of eight original songs he had cobbled together on borrowed equipment to Cavity Search Records; so began his career as a solo artist. Four years later, in 1998, he signed with DreamWorks. Smith came close to achieving pop stardom. His song, "Miss Misery" was nominated for a "Best Original Song" Oscar in 1998 for its use in the film Good Will Hunting. He appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Letterman Show and other TV shows, and by the time of his death in 2003, he had attained quite a large following as an indie-pop hero. Two biographies have been written and a number of tribute albums have been released by other indie artists, as well as tribute songs by Rilo Kiley, Third Eye Blind, Ben Folds, Rhett Miller, Earlimart, and others. He continues to inspire a great amount of web activity among his fans. Smith's main instrument was guitar, but he also played bass, drums, clarinet and had some classical piano chops (there's a YouTube video of him playing Rachmaninoff). He performed both as a solo acoustic act and with a full band on electric guitar. He usually played with his fingers, in a unique style that blended folk/blues fingerpicking with strumming. A Dylan "Don't Think Twice" influence is evident in songs like "Somebody That I Used to Know" and "Memory Lane," while "Condor Avenue" is reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel. The a copella "1 Didn't Understand" shows his classical roots (as well as an affinity for the Beatles and the Beach Boys). Other, fullyproduced rock offerings like "Son of Sam" and "Pretty (Ugly Before)" reveal all kinds of pop influences spanning the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties. Smith also employed some unusual open guitar tunings that added to the individuality and uniqueness of his sound. Despite the indie and punk influences in Smith's music, his songs are more harmonically complex than most pop or rock. There are more chords per tune, including jazz or orchestral chords, more unique and rambling progressions, and ascending or descending bass lines. Above all, he created his own sound (which he described as "impressionistic") and presented his work with the commitment and passion of a genuine, authentic artist. This book is an offering to make his music and guitar styling accessible to his fans, to keep his songs circulating, and to spread the word about the legacy he left behind.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

After a disappointing gig that ended with the police stopping the show, Keith Richards awoke in his room at the Jack Tar Harrison Hotel in Clearwater, Florida, with an insistent three-note riff and the words "I can't get no satisfaction" rolling around in his head. Fortunately, Richards committed these thoughts to tape and they were fleshed out the following day with his bandmate, Mick Jagger. The song was recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California, on May 12, 1965, with Keith playing his dream-inspired riff on an electric guitar through a Maestro FZ-1 fuzz pedal. It was Richards's intent to replace the guitar riff with a horn section, but, before that could happen, "Satisfaction" was released as a single and the song raced up the charts. In the succeeding four and a half decades, with its now immortal rift "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" has become an indictment on commercialism, a cross-generational anthem, a guaranteed show closer at any Stones concert and a bona fide cultural icon. Note: In the original recording, listen for the telltale click of the footswitch as the fuzz effect is engaged at 0:35 and 2:35.

Jumpin' Jack Flash. Like "Satisfaction," the origins of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" can be traced to the dreamy half-awake state of its creators. After a very late night at Keith Richards's country house, Mick Jagger was startled by the sound of Keith's gardener working outside the window. When Jagger asked about the noise, Richards replied, "Oh, that's jumpin' Jack Dyer." Recorded at Olympic Studio in London in the spring of 1968, the song features a unique guitar tone that Keith Richards has revealed to be a Gibson Hummingbird acoustic in open Etuning played into a small Philips cassette recorder. The guitar was very close to the recorder's onboard microphone and deliberately overloaded the input producing an overdriven sound. This effect was also used on "Street Fighting Man" from the same sessions. Note: As mentioned, the guitars on the original studio recording of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" are in open Etuning (as transcribed in this book), shown in Fig. 1, below. However, in December 1968, both Keith Richards and Brian Jones performed the song in standard tuning for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus concert film. At this show, the main riff of the song was played at the 2nd fret, as in Fig. 2. By July 1969, Keith Richards had begun performing the song in open G tuning with a capo on the 4th fret shown in Fig. 3. He continues to use this method to this day. Fig. 3 also shows the second guitar in standard tuning, playing the riff at the 7th fret.

BOOK & PLAY-ALONG Cds WITH TNT TONE 'N' TEMPO CHANGER

Alfred's Ultimate Play-Along series gives you everything you need to jam with your favorite songs. This book includes authentic TAB transcriptions, music notation, lyrics, and chords to eight Rolling Stones classics.

There are two versions of every song on the included CDs: a full-performance sound-alike recording, and a professional accompaniment track without bass so you can play along. When you use the CDs in your Mac or Windows-based computer, the TNT (Tone 'N' Tempo) Changer lets you easily loop sections for practice, change the key, slow tracks down or speed them up without changing the pitch, and switch back and forth between the full-performance and play-along tracks.

Let It Bleed

Grounded firmly in roots country-blues, "Let It Bleed" features Keith Richards's stinging slide work and the honky tonk piano of Ian Stewart. The song is a simply stated testament to friendship amid the ruins of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. This song features a foundational bass part comprised of roots, 5ths, and octaves with little superfluous embellishment.

Brown Sugar

With its compellingly catchy guitar riff, pounding tom-toms, yakety sax solo, clanging cowbell, tinkly piano, lyrics about forbidden interracial sex, and a razor-sharp hook ("Yeah, yeah, yeah, whoo!"), "Brown Sugar" may be the quintessential rock 'n' roll song. The song was recorded in December 1969 and, surprisingly, languished in the can for more than a year before being released. It quickly rose to the top of the charts. The throbbing eighth-note rhythm of the bass perfectly complements the song's jungle tom-tom beat.

Gimme Shelter

Perhaps the Stones' vision of the apocalypse in the turmoil-filled years of 1968 and '69, "Gimme Shelter" struck a resonant chord. The mood is ominously established with the tremolo-drenched rhythm figure performed by Keith Richards in open E tuning. The bass prowls the bottom of this spooky morass in a low rumble that is ultimately felt more than heard (much like the song's lyrics). This recording is notable for the prominence of Merry Clayton's vocals.

You Can't Always Get What You Want

Imagine how startling it was in 1969 for fans of the "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" to drop the needle on their latest release only to be greeted by the mass sound of the London Bach Choir. But have no fear: after the first chorus, Keith Richards's chimey acoustic guitar vamps between the I and IV chords, quickly leading the listener back to more familiar territory. The song is The Rolling Stones' epic about disillusionment and pragmatism at the end of the '60s. To convey this grand vision, the band supplemented their ranks with session ace AI Kooper on French horn, piano, and organ; Madeline Bell, Doris Troy, and Nanette Workman on vocals; and producer Jimmy Miller on the drums. Keith Richards did double duty, playing both acoustic guitar and the electric guitar licks, in standard tuning. Bill Wyman must have been listening to James Jamerson's work on countless Motown records because this R&B-influenced line is probably the funkiest bass part on any Stones record from the '60s. His bassline is similar to Jamerson's part in Gladys Knight and the Pips' original recording of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"-and that's a good thing, indeed!

Paint It, Black

Temporarily forsaking their blues roots, The Rolling Stones followed the mid-'60s trend of looking to the East with this driving quasi-Indian dirge. Multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones made his contribution to raga rock by adding the distinctive sitar part to this track. Propelling the groove, Bill Wyman played the pumping bass line by laying on the studio floor, hitting organ bass pedals with his fists, and then doubling that part on the bass guitar. Note: The original recording was subject to tape speed manipulation and the sounding key is in the crack between E minor and F minor. Video evidence of Keith Richards with a capo at the 2nd fret indicates the original key was E minor.

Eight classic Stones songs with full bass TAB. The CD contains a complete version and a play-along version (without bass) of each song. Embedded software allows you to slow down, loop, and even transpose keys on your computer. Matching guitar and drum editions are available! Titles:
