GUITARIST'S GUITARISTS. TABLATURE

Note-for-note transcriptions with tab for 16 searing songs from the gods of guitar! Includes an introduction by John Stix, founding Editor-in-Chief of Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. 160 pages.

JOH STIX
Founding Editor-in Chief, Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine
It was May 1983, during the earliest days of Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. Rock guitar tablature
was about to be joined with a magazine for the first time, and I had developed a mantra for selecting the songs.
The mantra, "It's the song, not the solo," was to remind me that great solos became classic because they
hitched a ride on great songs. We still marvel at the guitar parts and solos to songs like "Hotel California,"
"Stairway to Heaven," "All Along the Watchtower," "Black Magic Woman," and "Reeling in the Years" because
the songs still live as radio classics.
You and I know that the guitar parts and solos to these songs weren't just icing. The fact is, without them there
was no cake. They were vital ingredients for taste, texture, and form. The singer delivered the message, but in
these and in so many other cases, so did the guitarist. Has Jeff Beck ever been less a vocalist than the guy
standing in front of the microphone? Where would Ozzy be without Tony, Randy, or Zakk? How about Roth
without Van Halen or Vai, Plant without Page, Tyler without Perry, and B.B. without Lucille?
Now that we've established "the rule," let's forget it. We're all guitar players here. Let's just admit that we get
giddy because sometimes great guitar playing is just a joy to behold and we can have a blast getting off on
Allan Holdsworth's chops on full thrust or Steve Vai's double-jointed what-the-hell-was-that approach to just
playing the instrument. Let's admit that Jimmy Page's solo on "Since I've Been Loving You" is the best part
of that song.
So that's what this folio is about-the joy of guitar playing. That's the rush of gunning a hotrod down the
straightaway, taking the corners as fast as you can, or playing tooooomanynotes because it feels right. It's not
about complementing or supporting the singer or the song. It's about rocking out; it's about the solo; it's about
the guitar is king-and these are some of the players whom we have crowned at one time or another. It's about
guitarists getting high from great guitar playing.
So who have we got here? We've got the chops busters. There is no woodshed I know of that can turn out
superheroes combining the powers of the Hulk and the Flash. Yet no one hits you as hard and as fast as
players like Allan Holdsworth, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, and Steve Vai. How lucky can we get?
The combined imagination, strength, and agility of all these players is harnessed for the good of one segment
of mankind-other guitarists! Yeah, yeah; of course anybody can enjoy it, but we "get it" first.
We also have the melodic guys-they drive their Ferrari's mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear. We're talking about
restrained muscle, cool phrasing, good tone, and a lot of flair. It's a cry, not a yell. Sometimes it's a yell. So
here we've got everybody's favorite, Jeff Beck; the king of classy guitar playing, Larry Carlton; the man who
makes you know what he's feeling, Santana; phrasing and tone masters Blues Saraceno, Marc Bonilla, and
Steve Lukather; and blues maestro Stevie Ray Vaughan.
How-did-he-do-that playing can also be heard on the acoustic guitar. Naked and raw, flat-picked, or fingered,
the sound of strings on wood can blow you away just as easily as the push from a Marshall stack. Sure, AI Oi
Meola plays intricate melodic parts, but he also plays that fast because he can. And what about the how-manyfingers-
does-that-guy-have approach from Adrian Legg? He's got some sort of double-jointed, ambidextrous
thing going on, doubles on sax, and gets rid of embarrassing stains on nylon carpet pile!
This is a book full of tunes by guitarists who thrill other guitarists. They play rock, blues, jazz fusion, pop, and
acoustic music. They spend their days supporting the vocals and defining the song. And when they let loose,
these are the guys who make other people want to play the instrument-or maybe put it down. These are the
guys you read about in guitar magazines. They are why there are still guitar magazines today. And why in 1983
we started Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine-so we could explore the trails they laid down for the
rest of us. There had to be more than the mantra, right? So let's agree that a great song will stand the test of
time, but a great guitar part or solo will give you the time of you life. We're guitarists; we can have our cake
and eat it, too.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY MAFIA Zakk Wylde Play It Like It Is TABLATURE SPARTITI LIBRO CHITARRA ACCORDI

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, MAFIA. TABLATURE

THIS BOOK WAS APPROVED BY ZAKK WYLDE

Zakk Wylde went from being an unknown local musician to metal
god Ozzy Osbourne's lead axe-slinger. Along the way, he managed to
start Black Label Society, one of the most hard-rocking bands to ever
blast out of a set of speakers. BLS's seventh release, Mafia, is the ultimate and
finest testament to Wylde's musical virtuosity.
Wylde's tale begins at the age of eight when he quit his regimented piano
lessons. Playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" over and over just didn't suit him.
Instead of nursery rhymes, he sat down and taught Ilimself Elton John's
"Crocodile Rock." As he entered high school, the kid who wanted only to play
linebacker on the football team realized he was too small for the position. Zakk
Wylde, unlike many his age, took his lemon and made a shit-load of lemonade.
"I was at my coach's house one day and saw a Les Paul on the wall. My
coach's son picked it up and began playing," Wylde explains. "It was mind-blowing
to see someone do it in front of me. I was like, 'Holy Christ!' I went home
and practiced ten to twelve hours a day from the minute I got home from school
to the minute I went to bed."
Fortunately for all lovers of rock, the little guy from New Jersey never
stopped playing the thing. Upon graduating, Wylde saved up enough money to
buy a Gibson Les Paul Custom (this guitar now resides in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall
of Fame) and began gigging around New Jersey.
Screenwriters, pay attention: Wylde was shredding up a club one night in
986 with his band Stone Henge, when a rock photographer offered to pass
along a tape of him to Ozzy Osbourne and his manager-wife Sharon. Osbourne
had recently lost his lead guitarist, Randy Rhoads, in a plane crash.
"I thought, this guy's out of his mind," Zakk says boisterously of the photographer'
s offer. "But I was working at a gas station, so what did I have to lose? I
was a huge Black Sabbath, Randy Rhoads, and Ozzy fan, so I sent them a tape
demoing a couple of solos," Zakk recounts with a huge grin. "Next thing I know,
get a call from Sharon at my mom and dad's house and was flown out to
England and began writing with Ozzy! I was nineteen! It was fuckin' nuts, man!"
zakk went on to co-write some of Ozzy's bestselling and multi-platinum
albums, including No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears, and Ozzmosis. He
oured all around the world with Ozzy, playing his signature bull's eye Les Paul in
ont of huge crowds, and became a ferociously praised and accomplished
musician, as well as one of the most widely known guitarists in the metal kingdom.
In 2003 Guitar Player magazine voted Zakk one of the Greatest Guitarists
ever. The hard-living axe-wielder has also won Guitar World's MVP award
numerous times and was recently voted by the magazine's readers the biggest
"contemporary e Icon" alive.
in the 1994 Zakk formed the southern-friend band Pride & Glory. The kick-ass
power-trio released a self-titled album before hanging it up. Four years later Zakk
released his first and only solo album, Book of Shadows. The album was a
glimpse of what was soon to come: Black Label Society.
BLS (as they are also known) is how Zakk gets his rocks off when he's not
roaming around the globe with Ozzy. The band, as Zakk likes to say, is "pure
fuckin' brewtality!" and he's not kidding. Black Label is rowdy, aggressive, headbanging
metal in its finest and most true form. After five studio releases, one
live album, and one DVD, BLS has sold in excess of a million records. As a
result, branches of fans have formed all over the world (known as Black Label
Chapters); they exist solely to get together and rock out with the Society! "The
chapters are a bunch of buddies hooking up together and hanging out. It's like
two Yankees fans running into each other in Seattle. They'll slap each other on
the back and say, 'I'm Joe. Wanna get a drink?'" Wylde proudly explains. To all
the BLS chapter members out there, Wylde has one message: "Stay strong,
brothers, and keep on bleeding Black fuckin' Label!"
Mafia, Black Label's seventh album, is a celebration of all things BLS. "Mafia
is my family, my band, and the fans. But remember," Wylde warns, "you don't
want to fuck with the Mafia, man." "I look around," he adds "and BLS is growing
like one beautiful family." The self-produced Mafia contains songs such as
the head-bashing, balls-to-the-wall "Fire It Up." The song is a hellraiser, yet
catchy like nothing BLS has ever laid down before. "I just knocked that one right
out," Zakk proudly boasts. "I don't think it will be getting on Nickelodeon, but it's
so fuckin' fun to play, man."
From there we get to the album's first single, "Suicide Messiah," a tour de
force of fist-throwing swagger coupled with an extra dose of "Black Label brewtality"
thrown in to get the heads banging and the house stomping. Of the single
Billboard wrote, "The first growls recall Sabbath classics 'Iron Man' and
'Paranoid,' but then Wylde gets down to business, producing a thick menacing
dirge as he saws away on his axe." Then we have "In This River," a melancholy
and beautiful ballad written before tragedy struck, but is now a heartfelt tribute
to Wylde's fallen friend and musical brother, Dimebag Darrell. The song finds
Zakk on the piano he long ago taught himself to play, grieving the loss of his
closest friend. "It's Dime's song now. It didn't start out that way, but it's his ballad
now," the slinger musters up.
Mafia offers up eleven other spoonfuls of menacing metal, but, alas, only
leaves you craving more. Metal Edge's review proclaims: "For any self-respecting
metal fans out there who've yet to bear witness to the Black Label, consider
Mafia your initiation. Pay your respects and join the family-you're long overdue,
and it just doesn't get any better than this."
"With Black Label we all hang out and enjoy each other's company," Zakk
explains. "The only requirement to be in BLS is you can't be an asshole and you
got to be able to play your goddamn instrument." The man who owns some
seventy guitars takes that last rule very much to heart. "When I wake up I look
forward to playing and practicing. I still practice every day, whether it's for a
couple of hours or forty-five minutes. It's like I always say: You'll always be
forty-five minutes better than you were the day before." He goes on, "The sky's
the limit; it's endless, man. You got to stay hungry and keep trying hard. And
you never disrespect the warriors who came before you," Zakk announces at his
most humble.
Mafia finds Wylde joined by Nick Catanese (guitars), Craig Nunemacher
(drums), and James Lomenzo (bass). "I love these guys," he states. "We all
hang out on the road. I could never be in a band if I didn't like somebody. Life's
just too goddamned short for that shit," he adds.
In addition to BLS's five studio albums and their one slamming live album,
the band star in Boozed, Broozed, and Broken-Boned, their dynamic live DVD.
Rollingstone.com, on the show, wrote: "There are a lot of reasons to give one's
liver a serious workout. .. apparently three thousand Zakk Wylde fans share our
opinion, as evidenced by their spectacular performance."
Besides being a bona fide rock 'n' roll institution of his own, Zakk Wylde can
also list "movie star" on his resume. Wylde starred in 2001's Rock Star, featuring
Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston. Naturally, Wylde played the lead guitarist
in Wahlberg's band, Steel Dragon. Black Label guitarist Nick Catanese also
appeared in Rock Star as the guitar player in Steel Dragon's rival band, Blood Pollution.
What many do not know about the man known for his awesome finger-work
on the fretboard and explosive personality is that he is a devoted family man.
"Rock 'n' roll, are you fucking kidding me?" Wylde questions. "I'm the AI Bundy
of rock 'n' roll-I'm married with children. But hey," he adds, "I just want to play
some music, whip some fucking ass, drink a little beer, and hang out with the
family. That's all I need."
When asked about Mafia, Zakk Wylde is bound to crack a joke. "If you dig
the Carpenters, you're gonna like Mafia," he smiles. "No seriously," he says
gravely, "buy this album 'cause my kids need to eat and I got a humongous beer
tab to payoff. Please pay this beer tab off for me!" Wylde blurts out doubled
over in a raucous laughter.

... emulating some of my favorite singers-Paul Rodgers,
Gregg Allman, Rod Stewart. Sometimes it was
frustrating. I'd been playing guitar for so long, and
had gotten control over that, but this was uncharted
territory. Ultimately, it's allowed me a freedom as an
artist I hadn't felt before."
Joe's muscular fusion of righteous playing
and keenly etched vocals has never been more
seamless than on his latest solo album, You & Me.
Produced by South African-born studio ace Kevin
Shirley-whose credits include Led Zeppelin, the
Black Crowes, Aerosmith, and Joe Satriani-the
disc potently blends a "big rock sound," intense British
blues (about which Joe's especially passionate),
and gritty Delta roots. It's packed with standouts,
including an interpretation of Charley Patton's "High
Water Everywhere" (a tribute to New Orleans), "So
Many Roads" (a blues classic made famous by Otis
Rush), and "Tea for One," a Zeppelin gem embellished
with a full orchestra-and Jason Bonham
on drums. Bonamassa, who's been getting deeper
into songwriting, also cites the originals "Bridge to
Better Days" and the Ray Charles-inflected "Asking
Around for You" as favorites.
You & Me is mature work that continues to
unspool the artistic thread that began with Bonamassa's
solo debut, 2000's Top 10 Blues disc A New Day
Yesterday, named for the 1969 Jethro Tull classic
that Joe makes his own with (as allmusic.com calls
it) "a jaw-dropping performance." Produced by the
legendary Tom Dowd-whose career included work
with Aretha Franklin, Ornette Coleman, Eric Clapton
Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Rod Stewart, and
scores of others-the album features guest shots
by Gregg Allman, Rick Derringer, and Leslie West,
among other greats. The powerhouse original song
“miss You, Hate You" remains a cornerstone of Joe's
repertoire, as does the slide guitar showcase "Cradle
rock." In 2002 Bonamassa released So, It's Like
that, a brew of dead-on blues and classic pop-rock
production featuring all originals, including the tour
de force "Pain and Sorrow." The album was his first to
hitr 1 on Billboards Blues chart.
In 2003-designated "Year of the Blues" by
congress-Bonamassa returned with his heartfelt
tribute to the genre, Blues Deluxe, packed with nine
classics and three originals. In the liner notes, Harrris
Cohen observes that Joe "never loses touch with
the raw emotion that makes the blues what it is."
Reviewing Blues Deluxe, former Creem editor Jaan
Uhelszki added, "New York guitar phenom walks tall
in the blues tradition ... jettisoning fiery riffs inspired
by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Elmore James, and
Albert Collins into the future with furious playing, a
hard-rock sensibility, and a grizzled voice that owes
a debt to Gregg Allman. Equally inspired by the
Delta blues and the mid-'60s British blues boom,
the young firebrand ... is able to fuse those two
schools together, creating edgy blues-rock." Bonamassa
further honed that fusion on 2004's Had to
Cry Today, another sweat-soaked mix of innovative
and classic sounds made electrifying through his
gale force playing.
Bonamassa is also deeply committed to Blues
in the Schools, developed by the Memphis-based
Blues Foundation to educate students about the
legacy of the blues and to promote and preserve its
heritage. Joe has helped bring the program into over
100 schools across the country, and response has
prompted the Foundation to indefinitely extend it. "I
love the way the kids' eyes light up," says Joe. "We introduce
them to Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and
other legends. I explain this amazing musical family
tree to them, and talk about how almost every artist
today can be traced back to the origins of blues and
jazz." In 2005 Bonamassa became the youngest-ever
member of the Blues Foundations' 25-person Board
of Directors. "When they told me my name was in
the hat for it," he remembers, "I had that 'it's nice just
to be nominated' feeling. Then I was on a plane to
Memphis to actually become a part of it, and it was
an incredible honor."
Currently, when not performing shows as one of
the hardest-working artists on the road today, Bonamassa
is writing material for an acoustic album he's
planning to release in 2007. "I'm known as an electric
guitar player," he says, "but a big part of my music
started on the acoustic end, and I want to also show
that side of me." Born on May 8, 1977 (the day that
would have been blues icon Robert Johnson's 66th
birthday), Joe lives in Los Angeles with his evergrowing
collection of vintage and custom-made guitars
(now reaching the 200 mark). "I still feel like same
four-year-old who just got his first guitar for Christmas,"
says Joe-with a passion that's heard in every
note he plays.

JOHN MAYER GETS INTO SOME HEAVIER THINGS

When John Mayer emerged from the
Underground in 2001 with his debut album,
Room for Squares, he was a little-known 22-
Year-old with an acoustic guitar and
bundless energy. His ascent was rapid,
powered by nonstop touring and intensive
word of mouth, which reached critical mass
just as radio and the video channels were
discovering the young artist, Two years later,
Room for Squares was triple-platinum (the
album remained in the Top 100 after more
than 80 consecutive weeks on the Billboard
TOP 200 chart), spawning three hit singles,
one of which, "Your Body Is a Wonderland,"
earned him a Grammy in 2003 for Best Pop
Vocal Performance.
Mayer's much-anticipated Aware/Columbia
follow-up album, which bears the intriguing
title Heavier Things, demonstrates how far this
single-minded artist has come at this still-early
stage of his career.

''In some ways," Mayer says, "the stakes get
higher when you make a second major-label
record and everyone's looking. And in some
ways absolutely nothing is different, because
your voice still sounds the same, and your
hands still feel the same on the guitar, You just
write your songs, You're just a guy with a
guitar putting in a Thai food order at 9 p.m."

The 25-year-old Mayer possesses a
remarkable c1ear-headedness-fittingly, the
new album opens with a song titled
"Clarity"-and the rarefied level of
consciousness that distinguishes this artist's
songs has as much to do with their impact
as his gift for melody, elevated musicianship,
or disarming personality. All of these
elements, by the way, are present in spades
on Heavier Things.
The album was produced and mixed by Jack
Joseph Puig, whose credits include Sheryl
Crow, No Doubt, the Black Crowes, Hole,
and smart-pop progenitors Jellyfish,
"Jack understood what I wanted to do next,"
Mayer says of his decision to work with Puig.
"We had met by way of friendship, not
connections. I don't like pulling connections
in; I'd much rather make friends. He
understands the romance of making
records. Jack and I pushed each other to the
limits of our knowledge, and that's why the
record is as fresh as it is, There are raw
decisions made outside of the comfort zone
of past achievement."
Heavier Things was tracked in New York,
Mayer's present home, and completed at
Puig's longtime L.A. headquarters, Ocean
Way, In addition to the lead single, the
propulsive, hook-packed rocker "Bigger Than
My Body," the album contains several songs
Mayer performed live on his 2003 summer
tour of amphitheaters and arenas-songs
that became immediate crowd favorites.
These include the poignant "Daughters," the

smoldering, blues-based "Come Back to
Bed," the evocative "Wheel." and
"Something's Missing," which climaxes with a
timely and ingenious things-to-do-today
inventory.
Mayer's longtime bass player, David
LaBruyere, appears on all tracks apart from
the virtually solo acoustic "Daughters," while
keyboardist Jamie Muhoberac plays on
eight. Guest musicians include legendary
jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, drummers Matt
Chamberlain, Steve Jordan, and ?uestlove
from the Roots, percussionist Lenny Castro,
and horn player Jerry Hay. Also present are
guitarist Michael Chaves and drummer J,J.
Johnson from Mayer's touring band.

"I came off the road after two years of
straight touring and knew exactly what kind
of record I wanted to make-it wasn't an
accident," Mayer says of the process that led
to the creation of Heavier Things. "I wanted
to write songs this time that always felt good
under my hands, no matter what. The only
real criterion for the record was, 'Is it fun to
play? Is it physically fun to feel the vibration
of the strings or the feel of my throat when
I'm singing it?' If an idea didn't meet that
criterion, it got dumped.
"This record isas different from the last one as
I am from the last time I made a record," he
adds. "What that amount is, I don't know,
and I'm really interested to find out"

... musician, and get to a point somewhere between
the Trio record and Room for Squares-and
that's a really good place to be."
While the Trio tour showcased Mayer's blazing
fretwork, he says he learned lessons from those
shows about restraint. "When I made my first
record, there was no trust in space because it was
all me; everything was just on those six strings," he
says. "With Steve and Pino it was all about space,
using a whole different palette. When your tone is
good on the guitar, you need, like, four notes. The
more concise and right you have it, the less you
need around it." One listen to such spare, carefully
crafted songs as "Slow Dancing in a Burning
Room" or "I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)"
instantly reveals this new approach.
Mayer points to one song in particular as
the turning point for Continuum. "I wrote 'Gravity'
last summer, and it changed everything," he
says. "You talk less when you trust that people
understand you. 'Gravity' had to be sparse. And
when I listened to it for the first time, holding
back, it was a whole new game. That might be
the most important song I ever wrote."
Armed with this outlook, Mayer knew
Continuum would tackle larger ideas than
those that defined his previous albums. "A big
challenge was writing about big themes," he
says. "I'm not a better writer in terms of sitting
down in front of a pad, but I'm better in terms
of receiving inspiration and converting it into
something 'real' quicker. I'm better equipped to
deal with those moments."
The hard-hitting "Belief" tackles an
infinitely complex subject. Over a slinky,
hypnotic guitar groove, he sings, "We're never
gonna win the world, we're never gonna stop
the warlWe're never gonna beat this if belief is
what we're fighting for," questioning the power
and the limitations of faith and convictions.
"It's an intellectuallandmine-how do you
write a song about what people believe without
impugning their belie s?" he asks. I wanted
to get right next to people's beliefs and look at
them without threatening them. It's tricky. You
only get x number of syllables and you have to
write something you can defend."
With "Waiting on the World to Change,"
Mayer shot for something even more ambitious something
like an attempt to explain his
generation's attitudes about politics. "It's
meant to shed a little light on inactivity and
inaction," he says, "because I don't believe that
inaction is a lack of interest. I think inaction is
preservation-nobody wants to get involved in a
debate in which the rules and facts will change
so that they'll lose. So we end up with this other
option, which is, I guess we'll just have to wait
for things to get better.
Continuum also includes the first cover
Mayer has put on an album, his version of "Bold
As Love" by the incomparable Jimi Hendrix. "To
me, it's the quintessential Jimi Hendrix song,"
says Mayer. "The sensitivity, the imagery, the
power. I also think the third record is the time
when you challenge everybody. It's your throwdown.
Ilike inviting the challenge of, Should
this guy even touch Hendrix's music? To which I
answer, Well, everybody should. Why not?"
Ultimately, Continuum represents maturity,
both musically and thematically, for John
Mayer-a concept that he wasn't comfortable
with until now. "A lot of these songs are about
coming to terms with getting older," he says.
"My generation was never told we were going to
get older. We thought we were going to hear our
names on Romper Room for the rest of our lives.
For a long time, I was really upset about getting
older, worried that things were just going to level
out. But then I realized that everyone around me
was getting older at the same time. We're all
fighting it together, and we're always going to
be those kids, the first really emotionally aware
generation. When I realized that, I could relax
about it a little bit. And I thought that maybe I
can be the guy to sing about it.
