BIOGRAPHY

As a chart topping jazz guitarist and recording artist, a composer of over 200 published songs, network television show themes and scores, a producer of over 30 world renowned recording artists. and an in-demand clinician and educator, CHUCK LOEB is increasingly known as a true music world renaissance man.
With the February, 2005 Shanachie Records release When I'm With You marking his fourteenth CD, Chuck has attained the much-sought-after position in the jazz world as a musical artist with his own instantly recognizable sound.
Also a seasoned studio musician with thousands of sessions to his credit ranging from film scores, jazz to pop, rock and roll to Broadway, and classical to ethnic music, sound has always been a central focus in Chuck's musical journey which was greatly influenced by Stan Getz, the jazz saxophone giant who gave Chuck one of his first and most important 'name band' associations.
Chuck grew up in Nyack, NY, the suburb of New York City that was a perfect environment for a young person with an interest in music. He soon discovered that the area was home to numerous professional musicians who worked in the city, as well as a center for many arts, music, and performance education programs. It was in these surroundings and at the age of eleven that Chuck made what would tum out to be one of his most important decisions: to make music his life's work. Self taught for several years, Chuck began working with local bands when he was thirteen, and quickly became an in-demand musician for myriad engagements throughout the YC metropolitan area. Chuck was also exposed to jazz during this time, and decided that in order to reach the level he strove for, he would need to study formally. Along with local teachers Richie HaI1 and Hy White, Chuck traveled as far as Philadelphia to study with jazz "Guru" Dennis Sandole who eventually recommended that Chuck become a pupil of the legendary jazz guitarist Jim Hall in New York City.
After studying with Mr. Hall for the last two years of high school, Chuck enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Two years of intense study at Berklee would greatly enrich Chuck's talents and musical knowledge as a guitarist '" , composer and arranger. The lure of professional work led to his departure from the school in 1976 when he toured the world with pop singer Gloria Gaynor, and made his move into New York City itself. Throughout his early years there he began to make a name for himself as a sideman with jazz luminaries such as drummer Chico Hamilton, Latin
percussionist and band leader Ray Barreto, flautist Hubert Laws, and others. He also continued his musical studies , often practicing up to 8 hours each day.
In 1979 Chuck was asked to join the Stan Getz band. This proved to be a pivotal experience both musically and personally. As a member of Stan's group, and the composer of much of the band's repertoire, he had the chance to tour the world and perform at many of the world's major festivals, jazz clubs and concert venues. Eventually Chuck became the musical director of the group and it was also during this time that he met and married his wife Carmen Cuesta, a popular vocalist and songwriter from Madrid, Spain.
After leaving the Getz ensemble, Chuck resettled in New York and began to pursue a career as a studio musician. For the next several years, he logged thousands of hours in the studios recording, composing, and producing albums, soundtracks, jingles and television-show themes (Chuck is the composer of the ABC News Nightline, One Life To Live and CNN Network signature themes among many others). It was also during this period that Chuck began to expand his talents as a producer, which would soon become another major focus of his career.
A member of the popular jazz-fusion group Steps Ahead with Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Peter Erskine, and Victor Bailey, Chuck returned to the festivals and stages of the jazz world and decided to concentrate on his own music. In 1988.
after nearly ten years of uninterrupted studio work, Chuck began to develop his own recording career. His first recordino as a solo artist was for the Japanese label Jazz City with a critically-acclaimed CD titled My Shining Hour. Soon after, he signed a recording contract with DMP, the groundbreaking audiophile label which was one of the first to release their artists on compact disc. After recording five CD's with that company, Chuck left to sign with the famed world music and jazz record label Shanachie. It was with the release of his 1996 debut on Shanachie, The Music Inside, that Chuck began to reach a significantly wider audience. The title song from the CD reached the #1 position and remained there for six weeks, and since then Chuck has produced, composed and performed over twenty # I and Top 10 songs along with at least seven Top 20 albums as a leader.
Chuck continues to do clinics and instruction in major music schools and universities across the globe. His focus is currently to increase his involvement in the world of musie education as he feels his over three decades of experience as a multi-faceted music professional gives him the ideal background to educate music students as to what is needed to succeed in the industry.
A much-sought-after concert and club headliner and recognized as among the world's premier jazz guitarists, Chuck regularly collaborates with his wife Carmen Cuesta Loeb on her own CD's and live performances, and is a regular member of the fusion group Metro. He has two daughters and continues to live, compose and record in the New York area.

It's been 20 years since guitar monster Joe Satriani shook the world with his debut solo release, Not of This Earth. But when we broke this news to Satch himself, he couldn't believe it. 'Wow," he marvels. "I had no idea." Quickly he logs onto his website, satriani.com. "Whaddya know! You're absolutely right!" Of course, this just proves that Satriani isn't the type to look back-especially when he's got something like Super Colossal on his mind. Who can blame him? Even in a catalog that's overflowing with some of the most amazing six-string wizardry ever documented, Super Colossal, his newest Epic release, stands out. Whether you're a connoisseur of the guitaristic arts or someone who simply digs great grooves and passion in music, this CD lives up to its name. In fact, though Satriani has had a dream career that's ranged from building a reputation as the teacher that the greatest guitarists sought out for lessons, to exploding all over the map with more than ten million sales of eleven solo albums (two platinum, four gold), thirteen Grammy nominations, three platinum DVD's, the historic G3 guitar summits, and tours/sessions with everyone from Mick Jagger to Deep Purple to Spinal Tap, Super Colossal is an unprecedented achievement. Why? Because it's about more than playing guitar. It's about the magic in music. More precisely, it's about finding that sweet spot where sweeping gestures and a craftsman's attention to detail enrich each other. You hear it in the title track's thundering, foot-stomp beat and intricately textured lead line; in the spiritual intensity of "A Love Eternal"; in the raucous, party-down exhilaration of "Crowd Chant"; and in the cinematic menace of "One Robot's Dream:' And especially, you feel it because Satriani is digging-aown, finding the right note and letting.Jt fly, and focusing more on touching hearts than blowing minds. Super Colossal, then, completes his transformation, long in progress, from stunning instrumentalist to fully realized artistl "People who picked up on my records ear19on knew that I couldn't be easily pigeonholed;' Satriani says. "I was never a metal player or a fusion player or a straight-ahead rock player, though these are all elements of my personality. I think I just go further into each of those places now, especially on Super Colossal. To me, there's more variety here than on any other album I've done:' The title reflects the ambition that Satriani brought to this project from its first conceptual glimmer. In the spring of 2005 he was winding down the tour behind his previbus album, Is There Love in Space?, a marathon that had him playing 115 shows in 25 coun· tries over 14 months. His plan was to head home to San Francisco after the last show in India, wrap up a few projects-the G3 Live in Tokyo DVD, music for a NASCAR video game-and then start cutting a live CD. Maybe that was his road adrenaline talking, for once he allowed himself a short vacation, a different picture took shape. "It dawned on me that I didn't want to do that live album right now;' he explains. "In fact, I was totally against it. Instead, I wanted to stay in my little cave-my home studio-and build a beautiful t powerful record, one that sounds big on the su ce but also has details hidden inside that you hear after listening for maybe the tenth time.” With that, Satriani combed through more than 30 of his latest songs. As he whittled this list down, he backed away even further from the live concept, to the point that he decided to do the record, aside from the drum tracks, on his own. "I couldn't let any of them go," he admits. And so the hard work began. In early morning and late evening sessions, recording digitally in the cozy facility he'd built next to his son's playroom, shaping each sound carefully through familiar and new equipment, Satriani addressed his songs, beginning with a guide track that he'd lay down on electronic drums. The keyboard and guitar followed, with the bass coming in at the end. The further he got, the better he felt about working on his own. 'When you're a multi-instrumentalist, layering each part, you have lots of time to reflect," he says. "After a few months you're dying to take the music out in front of an audience and slam it out. But the opportunity to get really subtle and delicate exists only when you're recording these songs for the first time. Also, you learn from it. You're fully engaged, so that you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it.You worry and agonize over every detail, but six months later all that fades and you're in love with what you've done." This attention to detail shines throughout Super Colossal. Encouraged by the sounds he was discovering through the interplay of instrument, amp, speaker simulators, and processors, Satriani found ways to express himself through long notes, perfectly selected and caressed, as well as the occasional blinding run. "It was a journey for me to playa song like 'Ten Words,'" he points out, "to learn how to be restrained. You're not just wailing. It's hard to make an instrumental that really says something; that's not just background music or some superficial 'get up and dance' thing. There's nothing wrong with either of those forms; it's just that I'm not doing tI1at. I'm going deeper. "Besides, after making records for-now that you've pointed it out-20 years;' he adds, just a bit wryly, "I'd feel bad if somebody said, 'Man, you're just playing indiscriminately: You're supposed to get better and to learn how to make the music work, and sometimes that does mean laying back and really speaking through your guitar instead of treating it as a vehicle that lets you play realt fast, which increasingly means less and less to me:' After finishing his tracks, he sent them out for live drum overdubs: Four-"A Cool New Way;' "One Robot's Dream," "The Meaning of Love," and "Made of Tears"-went to session giant Simon Phillips in L.A.; the rest were cut by Satriani's longtime associate Jeff Campitelli in Vancouver, at the Armoury, a studic that co-producer Mike Fraser (AC/DC) recommended. The acoustics of its main room yielded exactly what Satriani wanted for the rhythm track: a big, brawny resonance that complemented the power of his most aggressive lines, and a rich whisper for softer moments. "I wanted a sound that was complex and emotional but never revealed the technology behind it," the guitarist explains. "As a result, I managed to find the best guitar tones I've ever put on record. The sound of this album, the incredible variety that somehow fits under this umbrella of uper Colossal, a it special in our book. “And he reminds us, ”I didn't even know I was celebrating 20 years”

FOREWORD

by Adrian Legg
Emotions live in more detail in different keys, and songs happen in different harmonic shapes.
A guitar is a small and frequently deficient platform on which we try to build sonic structures
that we hope will have emotional significance. A capo is a small step-stool on that platforma
leg up for a piece of music to help it into a new space where it can be emotionally effective
while developing its harmonic shape.
But perhaps we feel we should have to struggle to attain some kind of mortified purity? A
guitar without a capo is like a pew without a hassock. If you've got housemaid's knee, you
care more immediately about your knee hurting than God.
Depth of creative vision has never come to me when I've had a physical difficulty with which
to contend. It has come, though, after I've moved things around.

INTRODUCTION

"At one time, people probably thought frets were cheating, too." - David Wilcox

Abeginning guitarist goes from wanting to practice guitar to needing to practice once the
guitar becomes soul food. For many players, a capo is fundamental to that process.
Sure, a capo is just a little clamp that helps you change pitch easily. But that pitch change
can make a world of difference. The most obvious reason to change the pitch of a song is
so that you can sing along to it. So many people are sure they can't sing, when it's most
likely that they've been trying to sing along with a song that isn't in their vocal range.
Once you find your vocal range, suddenly it becomes fun to sing, and thus fun to play-the
guitar becomes a vehicle for expressing yourself vocally.
But there's much more to the capo than that. The basics of transposing and partial capo
work open up whole new worlds. This book makes it easy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Randall Williams holds undergraduate and conservatory degrees in music. He's a classically trained baritone who specializes in teaching structure for the acoustic guitar through partial capo work and open tunings.
