While the name "Guns N' Roses" was actually created by combining the ends of titles from singer Axl Rose's former bands L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose, it turns out that the name serves as an accurate depiction of the artistic contrasts which saturate much of the band's music. This is especially obvious in the guitar playing: raging power chord riffs and piercing solos are often countered by soulful slide guitar playing or other emotionally-moving guitar melodies. It is this exotic combination of raw energy and melody that is responsible not only for the band's highly successful career, but also for providing the catalyst for the population explosion of L.A. Heavy metal bands in the mid 1980s. With scores of bands having since attempted to emulate the successful sound of Guns N' Roses, there can be no doubt that the band has left their mark on the history of rock music for all time. Guns N' Roses' highly popularized success spawned literally scores of interviews through the form of radio, television, and magazine articles. Unfortunately for guitar-playing admirers, most of these interviews almost always ended up fixating on the band's outrageous stage antics or latest tale of debauchery, rather than focusing on what made them popular in the first place-their music! With controversy and gossip set aside, this book not only attempts to explore the band's distinctive sound, but also serves to help the reader become a better, more proficient guitarist through studying and performing the music of Guns N' Roses. The Guns N' Roses Signature Licks book and accompanying recording effectively serves as an interactive, "hands-on" learning tool with which to study and examine some of Guns N' Roses' best music. Transcription excerpts within the book feature some of the band's more significant and memorable riffs and solos off of selected tracks from Guns N' Roses' four albums. Performance notes are included for each example, and all of the excerpts also appear in audio form on the book's accompanying CD or cassette recording. This not only lets you hear the guitar in context, but allows you to more effectively practice the guitar parts in an ensemble setting. When first listening to the recording, you'll notice the lead or main guitar part is featured in the right channel while the rhythm section is heard in the left channel. This set-up allows you to alter the mix of the music with your stereo's balance control so you can practice with the recording in one of the three following ways:

1. You could leave the balance control in the middle to hear the riff in context with all the instruments,

2. or 2. pan the stereo's balance to the right to more clearly hear the featured guitar part, or

3. pan the balance to the left to allow for rehearsal with just the rhythm section.

By taking full advantage of the described study methods, you should be able to learn the songs more easily and prepare them for a live performance.
